Yegor Sharangovich scored with 4:28 remaining and Devin Cooley stopped 34 shots as the Calgary Flames beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Sunday, Oct. 18, at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist for Calgary, which regained the lead after Jalen Chatfield tied it with four seconds left in the second period. Matvei Gridin also scored for the Flames. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had Carolina’s other goal, and Brandon Bussi made 31 saves.

Sharangovich’s second goal of the season came at 15:32 of the third period, with Frost and Jake Middleton getting the assists. It was the only goal of the final period after the teams combined for four in the second.

Four goals turn the second period

The game remained scoreless through the first period before Kotkaniemi put Carolina ahead at 6:09 of the second. Nicolas Deslauriers and Eric Robinson assisted on his wrist shot, giving the Hurricanes a lead they held until the final 90 seconds of the period.

Gridin tied it at 18:30, scoring his first goal of the season on a wrist shot with Matt Coronato providing the assist. Nine seconds later, Carolina defenseman Mike Reilly was penalized for sending the puck over the glass, putting Calgary on the power play.

Frost converted that opportunity at 19:39. Frost scored on a tip-in, with Zayne Parekh and Joel Farabee credited with assists. Calgary had gone from trailing 1-0 to leading 2-1 before the intermission.

Carolina answered before the period ended. Chatfield scored his first goal of the season at 19:56, with Jaccob Slavin and Sebastian Aho assisting. That left the clubs tied 2-2 and erased the lead Calgary had taken only 17 seconds earlier.

Frost then contributed to the decisive goal in a different situation, assisting on Sharangovich’s even-strength winner. Cooley finished with 34 saves on 36 shots, while Bussi stopped 31 of Calgary’s 34. Neither side scored after Sharangovich put the Flames ahead for the second time.

Cooley holds the opening period; Calgary wins the special-teams comparison

Carolina outshot Calgary 14-8 in the scoreless first period. Cooley kept the Hurricanes off the board through that opening stretch, and Calgary finished with the shot advantage in each of the remaining periods: 12-11 in the second and 14-11 in the third.

The Flames killed both Carolina power plays and scored once in four opportunities of their own. Reilly’s late second-period delay-of-game penalty supplied the opening for Frost’s goal, while Carolina’s earlier penalties to K’Andre Miller and Felix Unger Sörum did not produce a Calgary score. The Flames also failed to convert their final power play after Kotkaniemi was called for high-sticking Frost at 3:09 of the third.

Frost’s impact extended beyond his two scoring plays. He won eight of 10 faceoffs as Calgary finished with 33 wins to Carolina’s 25. Sharangovich led the Flames with six shots on goal. Kotkaniemi led the Hurricanes with four.

The combinations behind the second-period goals

Kotkaniemi’s goal came with Nicolas Deslauriers and Eric Robinson alongside him. That trio generated an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal during 6:10 of measured five-on-five time and was on the ice for Carolina’s opening goal without allowing one in the available sample.

The forward group around Gridin changed before his equalizer. His most-used combination in the available shifts was with Ryan Strome and Martin Pospisil, a trio that was on the ice for Kotkaniemi’s goal. At 18:30, the recorded forwards were Mikael Backlund, Coronato and Gridin. Their shared overlap totaled only 11 seconds in the measured sample, but it included Calgary’s tying goal. Gridin’s scoring play therefore belongs to that brief combination rather than to his more frequently used trio.

Carolina’s next equalizer came with William Carrier, Aho and Andrei Svechnikov at forward and Slavin and Chatfield on defense. The Calgary forwards were Strome, Pospisil and Sharangovich, a separate 23-second overlap. Kevin Bahl and Simon Nemec were on the ice for both Gridin’s goal and Chatfield’s answer; that pair finished the available sample with one goal for and one against.

Frost, Sharangovich and Aydar Suniev shared 6:32 in the available five-on-five shifts, with Calgary ahead 4-3 in shots and neither team scoring during that overlap. Sharangovich’s winner came after the shift record ended. The official scoring record verifies Frost’s and Middleton’s assists, but the available shift data cannot establish the complete forward trio or defensive pair on the winning goal.

Among Carolina’s defensive pairs, Slavin and Chatfield shared 14:18 in the measured sample, with shots 10-11 and goals 1-1. Sean Walker and Miller were outshot 9-7 in 14:15 but were on the ice for Kotkaniemi’s goal and no Calgary goal in that span. For Calgary, Middleton and Zach Whitecloud were outshot 8-4 over 10:03 and were on the ice for Carolina’s opener.

Unit scope: the first two periods and the third through 13:16. The official shift feed ends there, leaving the final 6:44 outside this analysis. The sample contains 41:37 of five-on-five play with both goalies present and 48 shots on goal, including goals: Carolina 25, Calgary 23. These are observed shared shifts from this game, not permanent line assignments or full-game unit rankings.

SF/SA: shots on goal for/against, including goals. GF/GA: goals for/against. Shared time uses the overlap of official shift intervals with five skaters and a goalie on each side. At whole-second shift changes, events use the outgoing shift unless the incoming group is needed to include the recorded shooter and retain the correct personnel count. Power-play and penalty-kill events are excluded from these unit tables.
