Quinn’s first assist began Buffalo’s third-period recovery. He sent the puck across to Dennis Gilbert, who scored at 10:05 to cut the deficit to 4–3. Benson received the secondary assist. Samuelsson tied the game 2:11 later on a goal assisted by Tage Thompson.

In overtime, Quinn moved the puck to Power in the slot, and the defenseman beat Bobrovsky at 3:14. Ostlund earned the secondary assist on the winner. Quinn also completed a Gordie Howe hat trick: at least one goal, one assist and one fight in the same game.
