Movement creates the first two goals

Draisaitl’s opener at 7:16 of the first period came from a passing sequence rather than an extended individual rush. McDavid moved high in the offensive zone, exchanged the puck with Evan Bouchard and sent it down to Draisaitl near the left post. Draisaitl met the pass with a quick one-touch finish before Darcy Kuemper could get across.

The useful detail is the timing between the passer and the receiver. McDavid’s movement and the return pass from Bouchard changed the angle of the attack. Draisaitl arrived in position to finish without stopping the puck, shortening the time available for the goalie to recover.

Exactly one minute later, McDavid helped create the eventual winning goal on the power play. He built speed before entering the offensive zone, carried toward the net and put a shot on goal. Vasily Podkolzin converted the rebound at 8:16. McDavid and Bouchard received the assists. McDavid’s impact here came through a direct shot that produced another scoring opportunity.

McDavid turns a clearance into a breakaway

At 15:48, McDavid scored Edmonton’s third goal after Ty Emberson lofted the puck out of the defensive zone. McDavid took it down, continued toward the net and pulled it onto his backhand to finish around Kuemper’s left pad. Emberson and Jason Dickinson received the assists.

That sequence connects the escape from pressure to McDavid’s finishing skill. The Oilers had spent time defending before Emberson’s pass found him moving up ice. McDavid controlled an airborne puck without losing the forward momentum that carried him into the scoring position.

Draisaitl’s later chance and the closing pass

Draisaitl also generated a third-period chance during four-on-four play. He carried through the neutral zone, resisted pressure from Alex Laferriere and moved toward the middle for a quick shot. Anton Forsberg saved it. The play shows how Draisaitl used the extra space to create a shot, even though it did not add to his two-point total.

With 2:18 remaining, McDavid passed across to Podkolzin for the empty-net goal. Draisaitl received the secondary assist. McDavid therefore had a point on all four Oilers goals, while Podkolzin supplied two of the finishes.

The score needs its defensive context

The Kings outshot Edmonton 40–17, and Levi stopped 39 shots. Los Angeles’ only goal came at 17:29 of the second period after an attempted Edmonton exit failed. McDavid had backtracked to disrupt the entry, but Draisaitl’s subsequent attempt to push the puck forward did not clear the zone. Brandt Clarke scored through traffic.

Both stars finished plus-two, but that figure does not measure possession or every defensive sequence. Their scoring plays gave Edmonton an early cushion. Levi’s workload and the shot disparity show how much defending the Oilers still had to do to protect it.
