The San Francisco 49ers stayed unbeaten, but their defense had to preserve what their offense built. Christian McCaffrey scored twice, Brock Purdy threw for 264 yards and San Francisco held off the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday, October 19, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The 49ers improved to 6-0 after leading 20-3 at halftime and 23-3 in the third quarter. Washington scored two touchdowns and held San Francisco without a first down on its final three possessions, giving Jayden Daniels two opportunities to drive for the winning score. Neither reached the end zone.

Malik Mustapha stopped Jeremy McNichols on third down and broke up Daniels’ fourth-down pass to Treylon Burks, returning the ball to the 49ers with 1:54 remaining. Washington got it back with 52 seconds left, but an intentional-grounding penalty and a sack shared by Keion White and Romello Height ended its final possession. The Commanders fell to 1-4-1.

Purdy and McCaffrey build the first-half margin

San Francisco’s opening possession covered 64 yards in nine plays. Mike Evans caught a 24-yard pass on third-and-4, and Purdy finished the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle. Washington answered with Drew Stevens’ 51-yard field goal, but Evans immediately put the 49ers back into scoring territory with a 54-yard reception on their next offensive snap.

Purdy then supplied a conversion with his legs. Kyle Shanahan kept the offense on the field for fourth-and-3 at the Washington 11, and Purdy scrambled seven yards. McCaffrey finished the possession with a one-yard touchdown run. Eddy Pineiro missed the extra point, leaving San Francisco ahead 13-3 with 4:09 remaining in the first quarter.

The second quarter gave Washington a chance to change that pattern. A possession that began late in the first period reached the San Francisco 13, but Daniels’ fourth-and-2 pass fell incomplete. Later, K’Lavon Chaisson forced a McCaffrey fumble and Frankie Luvu recovered at the Washington 19. The Commanders could not turn that takeaway into points and punted.

San Francisco took over with 6:26 left in the half and used nearly all of it on a 14-play touchdown drive. Purdy scrambled for 11 yards on third-and-11 after a holding penalty had put the offense behind the chains. Near the goal line, Shanahan again passed up a fourth-down kick: Purdy gained two yards on fourth-and-1 from the Washington 3. McCaffrey scored from the 1 with 13 seconds remaining.

Both of San Francisco’s fourth-down attempts produced first downs and led to McCaffrey touchdowns. The 49ers also converted five of eight third downs before halftime. They finished the half with 303 net yards, 17 first downs and 19:52 of possession; Washington had 90 yards, two first downs and no conversions on four third-down attempts.

Washington sustains the comeback

San Francisco added to its lead on its first possession of the second half. Kittle’s 35-yard catch helped move the ball into scoring range, and Pineiro made a 33-yard field goal for a 23-3 advantage with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter. It was the 49ers’ last score.

Daniels kept Washington’s next possession alive with a 13-yard completion to Stefon Diggs on fourth-and-5 from the San Francisco 31. The Commanders finished the 11-play, 65-yard drive with Daniels’ one-yard touchdown pass to Diggs, cutting the deficit to 23-10 with 15 seconds left in the period.

After a San Francisco punt, Washington drove 80 yards in 10 plays. An illegal-contact penalty on Renardo Green erased a third-down incompletion, and Daniels later found Antonio Williams for 23 yards on third-and-8. A roughing-the-passer penalty added nine more yards to that play. Rachaad White caught a nine-yard touchdown pass with 9:22 remaining, bringing Washington within 23-17.

The Commanders had changed the possession balance. They held the ball for 20:07 after halftime and gained 224 net yards on 44 offensive plays. San Francisco managed 72 yards on 19 plays in the half, including only three first downs. Purdy, who had completed 17 of 22 passes for 214 yards before the break, went 4-for-7 for 50 yards afterward and was sacked twice.

Mustapha stops one drive, the pass rush ends the next

Washington’s next possession lasted almost six minutes and included two plays that appeared to settle the game in opposite directions before penalties intervened. McNichols’ apparent 31-yard touchdown run was nullified by Chris Paul’s face-mask penalty. Later, Height and Jaden Dugger appeared to sack Daniels on fourth down, but Ashtyn Davis’ illegal-contact penalty erased that play and kept the drive alive.

Washington eventually faced third-and-3 at the San Francisco 17. Mustapha stopped McNichols for no gain, then defended Daniels’ fourth-down throw to Burks. The snap came at the two-minute mark; the incompletion ended the possession at 1:54. Mustapha finished with four solo tackles, a pass defended and a quarterback hit.

The 49ers still could not secure a first down. They punted after three plays, and Siran Neal’s fair-catch-interference penalty helped Washington begin at its own 46 with 52 seconds left. Daniels moved the offense to the San Francisco 28, putting a potential winning touchdown within reach.

An intentional-grounding penalty with 21 seconds left cost Washington 12 yards, a down and a 10-second runoff. On third-and-22 from the San Francisco 40 with six seconds remaining, White and Height combined for an 18-yard sack as time expired. That was the 49ers’ fourth sack; the earlier fourth-down play erased by Davis’ penalty does not count in the total.

Where the game was decided

Daniels finished 29-for-40 for 300 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Purdy was 21-for-29 for 264 yards and one touchdown, also without an interception. Their individual passing totals conceal a meaningful difference: San Francisco lost 15 yards on two sacks, while Washington lost 39 on four. The 49ers also outrushed the Commanders 126-53.

McCaffrey supplied 117 yards from scrimmage on 25 touches, combining 64 rushing yards on 16 carries with nine catches for 53 yards. Evans had three receptions for 94 yards, while Kittle caught five passes for 69 yards and the opening touchdown. Washington spread Daniels’ completions among nine receivers; Chig Okonkwo led with seven catches for 69 yards, and Burks added 66 yards on four receptions.

The first-half fourth-down decisions separated the offenses. San Francisco’s two conversions kept touchdown possessions alive, while Washington’s attempt at the 13 produced no points. Washington improved after halftime, but its final two trips into San Francisco territory ended on downs and with time expiring. The Commanders finished 3-for-12 on third down and 1-for-3 on fourth down; the 49ers were 7-for-14 and 2-for-2.

The personnel listed to start the game also show the different skill groups available: San Francisco opened with Evans and Jordan Watkins at receiver alongside Kittle, fullback Kyle Juszczyk and McCaffrey. Washington listed tight ends John Bates and Okonkwo, receivers Burks and Terry McLaurin, and running back Rachaad White. Nick Bosa was inactive for San Francisco. Its listed starting defensive front included Osa Odighizuwa, Gracen Halton, White and Height, and all four were credited with at least a share of a sack.

Evans and McLaurin leave with injuries

Evans left late in the first half. The 49ers ruled him out with an Achilles injury, according to the team announcement reproduced by 49ers Webzone. Linebacker Luke Gifford was listed as questionable to return with a groin injury. The announcement did not establish a recovery timetable.

Washington lost McLaurin in the first quarter with a knee injury. He was carted off and ruled out, NFL.com reported. McLaurin’s only catch went for 27 yards. No diagnosis or return date was confirmed in that report.

Current-game postgame interviews from San Francisco and Washington were not available in the original team sources reviewed for this report.
