Possession is minutes and seconds; Sacks-Yards Lost and Penalties show count and yards.
Third downs help Green Bay open the scoring
Green Bay converted all four third downs on its opening touchdown possession at Lambeau Field. Love completed a 15-yard pass to Savion Williams on third-and-5 and a 27-yard pass to Christian Watson on third-and-13. After Quinnen Williams sacked Love for a 3-yard loss, Love found Pierre Strong Jr. for 14 yards on another third-and-13.
The possession ended with Love’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden on third-and-6. Trey Smack’s extra point gave the Packers a 7-0 first-quarter lead.
Green Bay finished 11-for-18 on third down, compared with Dallas’ 5-for-13. The Cowboys converted two of four fourth-down attempts; the Packers converted their only attempt.
Interceptions precede Green Bay’s second-quarter scores
Dallas gained a possession in Green Bay territory when Dee Winters intercepted a pass intended for Golden at the Packers’ 42. Winters initially was awarded a touchdown on the return, but replay reversed that ruling and left the Cowboys with the ball at the interception spot.
The Cowboys advanced to the Packers’ 17 before Evan Williams intercepted Dak Prescott’s pass intended for CeeDee Lamb at the 3-yard line early in the second quarter. Williams returned it 17 yards. Smack’s 25-yard field goal on Green Bay’s ensuing possession extended the lead to 10-0.
Brandon Cisse intercepted Prescott on Dallas’ next possession at Green Bay’s 18 and returned the ball 5 yards. Love scored on a 1-yard run later in the quarter, and Smack’s extra point gave the Packers a 17-0 halftime lead. Green Bay’s possessions immediately after Prescott’s two first-half interceptions produced 10 points.
Dallas answers in the third quarter
Javonte Williams scored Dallas’ first touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter. Brandon Aubrey’s extra point cut Green Bay’s lead to 17-7. Smack kicked a 44-yard field goal on Green Bay’s next possession, extending the lead to 20-7.
Kenny Clark sacked Love for a 10-yard loss on third-and-2 from Green Bay’s 14 late in the quarter. The Packers faced fourth-and-12 at their 4 and punted on the next play.
Two fourth-down stops limit Dallas in the fourth
Dallas failed on fourth-and-2 near midfield early in the fourth quarter when Prescott’s pass intended for Lamb fell incomplete. Smack subsequently kicked a 29-yard field goal to extend Green Bay’s lead to 23-7.
A roughing-the-passer penalty on Lukas Van Ness nullified Carrington Valentine’s interception of Prescott later in the quarter. Dallas retained possession.
Prescott then converted fourth-and-5 with an 11-yard completion to Ryan Flournoy at Green Bay’s 12. An unnecessary roughness penalty on Tyler Booker moved the ball back to the Packers’ 27, where Dallas retained a first down.
A separate roughing-the-passer penalty on Karl Brooks moved Dallas from Green Bay’s 27 to the 13. Van Ness then sacked Prescott for a 3-yard loss. The Cowboys eventually faced fourth-and-11 at the Packers’ 14, where Prescott’s pass intended for Lamb fell incomplete and ended Dallas’ possession.
Dallas scores late
Prescott connected with Flournoy on a 6-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, cutting Green Bay’s lead to 23-13. Prescott’s two-point pass intended for Lamb fell incomplete, and a holding penalty on Terence Steele was declined.
Brandon Aubrey’s ensuing onside kick went out of bounds, and Love took two kneeldowns to finish the game.
Turpin ruled out; Lloyd and Kraft return
KaVontae Turpin was ruled out with a rib injury after the opening kickoff, according to the Packers’ in-game report.
Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd returned in the second quarter after being injured on the Winters interception. Tight end Tucker Kraft returned in the third quarter after an injury late in the first half.
Schottenheimer, Prescott and LaFleur react
After the loss, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer emphasized mistakes while defending his team’s effort. In remarks reported by Todd Archer, he said: “The effort is right. The fight is right. Mistakes are killing us.”
Dak Prescott said Dallas’ defense had played well enough to win, but the offense had not done its part, Calvin Watkins reported. Dallas was scoreless in the first half and finished with 303 total yards.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur criticized the ground attack in comments reported by Jason B. Hirschhorn: “We’ve got to find a way to get this run game going, because it’s just too inconsistent.”
According to Zach Jacobson, LaFleur said of Jordan Love: “He’s a G.” Love passed for 276 yards and accounted for both Green Bay touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground.
