Caufield Scores Twice as Canadiens Beat Sabres 4-3 in Overtime

Cole Caufield scored 54 seconds into overtime after Buffalo erased a 3-1 deficit. Juraj Slafkovsky and Alexandre Carrier each had two assists for Montreal.

Cole Caufield scored his second goal of the game 54 seconds into overtime as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Centre Bell after losing a two-goal lead.

The deciding sequence turned a Buffalo chance into a Montreal breakaway. Josh Norris missed wide at 0:45 of overtime. The puck rebounded hard off the boards, and Caufield chased it down near the blue line before skating in alone and beating Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen over his blocker-side shoulder, according to the NHL’s game report. The unassisted goal was Caufield’s fifth of the season.

Zachary Bolduc and Alexandre Texier also scored for Montreal, which improved to 4-3-1 with nine points. Juraj Slafkovsky and Alexandre Carrier each had two assists, and Jacob Fowler made 23 saves. Norris, Jack Quinn and Tage Thompson scored for Buffalo, which fell to 4-3-2 with 10 points. Luukkonen stopped 30 of 34 shots.

Montreal answers Norris with three straight goals

Norris gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 8:21 of the first period, with Konsta Helenius receiving the assist. Montreal answered on its first power play after Noah Ostlund was penalized for slashing. Bolduc tipped Nick Suzuki’s shot past Luukkonen at 11:45 for his fourth goal of the season; Slafkovsky had the other assist.

Caufield put the Canadiens ahead at 14:01, scoring on a quick shot after Slafkovsky’s pass from behind the net. Carrier also assisted. Montreal led 2-1 after a period in which the teams combined for 12 shots on goal, seven by the Canadiens and five by Buffalo.

Ruff cautioned against judging the opening by Montreal’s lack of early shots on goal. In his postgame assessment, he pointed to two dangerous Montreal chances that missed the net and said the start had improved while still requiring more.

Texier extended Montreal’s lead to 3-1 at 7:39 of the second period, finishing his own rebound after a Kaiden Guhle point shot. Carrier earned his second assist. It was Texier’s first goal of the season, and Montreal outshot Buffalo 15-12 over the period.

Quinn’s shorthanded goal starts the comeback

Montreal had a chance to add to its lead on the power play, but Quinn instead brought Buffalo within one at 9:52 of the second. Zach Benson and Mattias Samuelsson assisted on the shorthanded goal, Quinn’s fifth of the season. It was Buffalo’s only shorthanded shot on goal in the game.

Quinn said Benson “made a great spin pass to me alone in front.” In his official postgame interview, he explained that he was arriving from far away and had not known whether Benson would see him.

Buffalo then killed a Montreal five-on-three lasting 44 seconds later in the period. Montreal finished the second with a 3-2 lead, but the special-teams opportunities had not produced another Canadiens goal.

Thompson tied it 3-3 at 10:12 of the third, with Josh Doan and Jiri Kulich assisting. Doan’s pass found Thompson at the far post. Thompson credited Doan’s puck pursuit and support in the corner in his postgame explanation of the goal. It was Thompson’s fifth of the season.

Buffalo cannot convert its late chances

Slafkovsky’s tripping penalty at 17:43 of the third gave Buffalo a late power play with the score tied. The Sabres did not score and finished 0-for-4 with three power-play shots on goal over 6:01. Montreal had a 10-9 shot advantage in the third and recorded both shots on goal during the 54 seconds of overtime.

“We could have made them pay, but instead, goes the other way, and they made us pay,” Ruff said in his postgame availability.

He was answering a question about the two-goal rally, the final power play and Buffalo’s unconverted overtime three-on-one. Asked specifically about that power play, Ruff approved its puck movement and response to pressure but said the shooters had not found a gap.

“Could've put it away at the end there, but the last one was the best it's looked, I think, all season,” Thompson said in his official interview.

His assessment concerned the unit’s improved movement and attacking play, rather than the result. Thompson also said Buffalo’s power play still required substantial improvement despite his favorable view of its five-on-five play.

Montreal finished 1-for-5 on the power play over 6:37. Bolduc’s first-period goal and Quinn’s second-period shorthanded reply left both clubs with one goal during Canadiens power plays. The two five-on-five goals for each team and Caufield’s three-on-three winner account for the remaining scoring.

St-Louis credits the top line’s defending

“I thought they played hard. I thought they defended hard,” Montreal coach Martin St-Louis said when asked about his top line’s performance.

In the Canadiens’ official postgame availability, St-Louis said all three players wanted to make a difference, including defensively in the third period. He credited Slafkovsky’s stick and forecheck for disrupting the play that became Caufield’s regulation goal.

Asked about his line’s puck pursuit and confidence, Caufield said “creating chances and getting turnovers is a big part of what we do.”

The five-on-five combinations tell a different scoring story

Montreal led shots on goal 22-21 at five-on-five with both goalies present, but the teams scored twice each over that 44:30 sample. Caufield, Suzuki and Slafkovsky shared 9:56, with a 6-3 shot advantage and a 1-0 goal advantage. Their goal was Caufield’s first-period score; his winner came at three-on-three and is separate from those figures.

Buffalo’s Benson–Quinn–Ostlund combination had the most shared five-on-five time among the listed trios, 11:55. It led shots 7-2 without a goal for or against. Quinn’s shorthanded goal came with Benson but without Ostlund, so it does not turn that five-on-five group’s score into a goal advantage.

Thompson and Doan spent 8:14 with Ryan McLeod. That group recorded two shots for and four against, with no goals for and one against. Kulich was their third forward on the tying goal. The Kulich–Thompson–Doan group shared 2:38, led shots 3-1 and had a 1-0 goal advantage. Montreal’s Alex Newhook, Josh Anderson and Chris Kreider were together for 9:44 and were on for both Buffalo five-on-five goals, while trailing shots 6-5.

Defensive pairs and scoring-shift changes

Olen Zellweger and Samuelsson shared 15:31 for Buffalo, leading shots 12-7 and finishing even at one goal each. Owen Power and Zach Metsa were also on for a goal at each end over 10:48, with shots even at five apiece.

For Montreal, Lane Hutson and Noah Dobson shared 15:38, with shots even at seven and one goal against. Guhle and Carrier trailed shots 8-5 in 14:56 but had a 1-0 goal advantage through Texier’s goal. David Reinbacher and Arber Xhekaj led shots 7-3 in 7:24 but were on for Norris’s goal and none for.

Carrier and Hutson were the pair on Caufield’s regulation goal, sharing only 1:15 together at five-on-five. The overtime winner used Suzuki, Caufield and Hutson against Norris, Thompson and Power. Caufield replaced Phillip Danault five seconds into overtime; the three-on-three winner is separate from the five-on-five measures.

The measured sample is 44:30 of regulation with five skaters and a goalie on each side. The official 45:23 five-on-five strength label includes Buffalo’s 0:53 delayed-penalty interval with six skaters and no goalie; that interval is removed. There were no shots on goal or goals during it. In the filtered sample, Montreal led shots 22–21 and goals were 2–2. Shared time uses intersections of official shift intervals; shots and goals use the official event on-ice personnel. Power plays, penalty kills, four-on-four, three-on-three overtime and the extra-attacker interval are excluded. Each unit’s row uses its own shared minutes. Forward and defense rows overlap and must not be added together. These single-game results do not establish sustainable unit rankings.

What comes next

No full audio or video playback review was performed. The separate five-on-five analysis identifies its eligible strength, personnel and shared-time denominators.
