Yankees Face Jazz Chisholm Qualifying-Offer Decision Before Monday’s Deadline

Chisholm finished 2026 with 19 home runs and 41 stolen bases. New York must decide whether to make the second baseman a qualifying offer.

The New York Yankees face a Monday, November 2, deadline to decide whether to extend Jazz Chisholm Jr. a qualifying offer worth $23.15 million for 2027. MLB lists the second baseman among this offseason’s candidates, with no tender decision recorded in its tracker Sunday.

An October 16 SNY report, citing Jon Heyman of the New York Post, said the Yankees were expected to make a qualifying offer to closer David Bednar but not Chisholm. That report described anticipated decisions, rather than completed transactions.

Chisholm finished 2026 batting .231 with a .312 on-base percentage and .399 slugging percentage over 137 games. He hit 19 home runs and stole a career-high 41 bases, according to an October report by Evan Woodbery of MLive.

His power declined from the 31 home runs he hit in 2025, when he also stole 31 bases. Chisholm played exclusively at second base defensively in 2026, although his major league experience also includes third base and center field. He will turn 29 before the 2027 regular season begins.

A qualifying offer is a one-year contract. If Chisholm receives and accepts one, he would return at the designated salary. Players receiving an offer have until 4 p.m. EST on November 17 to accept or reject it. Rejection leaves him free to negotiate elsewhere.

The offer also carries consequences beyond salary. Under the current rules, a team can receive draft compensation when a qualified free agent signs elsewhere. New York’s competitive balance tax status would place its compensation after the fourth round, CBS Sports reported.

Eligibility requires spending the entire preceding season with one club and never having received a qualifying offer before. A player’s inclusion among candidates does not mean his club has made the offer. Monday’s team deadline comes before the separate player response deadline later in November.
