Spanish Police Investigate Jesús de Miguel’s Death After On-Field Collision
The Tenerife striker died Tuesday at 30. Reports describe the inquiry as routine; no criminal charge has been established.

Spain’s National Police have opened an investigation into the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died Tuesday at 30 after an on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest after Monday’s collision during a Spanish second-division match and was taken to hospital. The match was abandoned, USA Today reported. Owono had been shown a red card following the incident near midfield.
The police proceedings concern possible involuntary manslaughter. An investigation does not establish that a criminal offense occurred or that a player has been charged.
The Independent’s report said authorities in the Canary Islands described the inquiry as standard procedure following a non-natural death. Opening the inquiry does not establish that Owono committed an offense.
Tenerife, Andorra and clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid paid tribute to De Miguel. UEFA announced moments of silence at this week’s matches, according to The Independent.
USA Today’s report said the goalkeeper was unlikely to face charges. It cited comments to EFE by José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui, the chief prosecutor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
