Crystal Palace Appeal Jean-Philippe Mateta’s Red Card Before Liverpool Match
Palace are challenging the dismissal that leaves Mateta facing a three-match suspension after the Tottenham defeat.

Crystal Palace have appealed Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card against Tottenham, BBC Sport reported Tuesday, as the striker faces a three-match suspension before the club’s next Premier League game against Liverpool.
Referee Michael Oliver initially booked Mateta for a challenge on Micky van de Ven in the 13th minute of Saturday’s match. The decision was upgraded to a straight red card after a VAR review.
According to BBC correspondent Sami Mokbel, Palace believe the contact on the defender’s ankle was accidental. The club hopes to overturn the dismissal or reduce the resulting suspension.
Filing an appeal does not establish that the red card has been rescinded. The BBC report did not include a decision on Palace’s challenge.
The game was scoreless when Mateta was sent off. Tottenham subsequently won 2–0, leaving Palace in the bottom three with seven points.
Palace are scheduled to host Liverpool on Sunday. Mateta’s availability for that game depends on the outcome of the disciplinary process, rather than the club’s decision to contest the dismissal.
