What Is USOPV? The Commercial Venture Behind Team USA’s Search for Investors

The USOPC is exploring outside financing for a commercial venture. Official minutes and the CEO’s interviews describe a new business structure whose terms remain unsettled.

U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Ventures, or USOPV, is the commercial business the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee is developing as it seeks outside financing and prepares for the period after the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

The proposal concerns the business built around Team USA, including sponsorship and licensing. It has not produced an announced sale with a named buyer, ownership percentage or agreed valuation.

Reuters reported Tuesday, citing two people familiar with the matter, that the USOPC was advanced in setting up an entity that could sell a stake for capital. Chief executive Sarah Hirshland told the news agency that the model and its details were “very much in progress.”

What the new venture would cover

Hirshland supplied more detail in a separate interview with Sportico. She said USOPV would encompass domestic and international sponsorship and licensing, content distribution and direct-to-consumer sales.

Ticketing and hospitality for Utah’s 2034 Winter Games would remain with that organizing committee, she said. That exception matters: the proposed venture is not a purchase of every business associated with a future American Olympics.

The investor proposition is still being developed. Hirshland declined to give Sportico a valuation and said the organization was examining its options when asked about private equity, institutional capital and sovereign wealth funds.

Why the timing matters

The existing commercial partnership between the USOPC and LA28, United States Olympic and Paralympic Properties, ends after the Los Angeles Games. Reuters reported that Hirshland described USOPV as part of preparing for that transition and for future host organizations.

The distinction between USOPP and USOPV is therefore functional as well as alphabetical. One is the existing LA28-linked commercial arrangement. The other is the proposed structure for a broader next phase.

The project predates Tuesday’s reports. Approved June 30 board minutes record work on the new model and preliminary discussions with potential investors and strategic partners. Those minutes document planning; they do not disclose a completed financing agreement.

The business and the governing body

The USOPC is a federally chartered nonprofit that serves as America’s Olympic and Paralympic committee. Its published organizational description says it is privately funded through public generosity and commercial partners rather than government funding.

That makes commercial revenue part of how the organization supports athletes and national governing bodies. Its responsibilities include fielding U.S. teams and providing services ranging from training facilities to sports medicine and career support.

The proposed investment concerns a commercial vehicle. In a statement carried by Reuters, the USOPC said it was evaluating options while preserving its mission, governance and leadership. The available announcements do not establish that an investor would gain control of athlete selection or the committee itself.

The June minutes also distinguish LA28’s responsibility for organizing, financing and delivering the Games from the USOPC’s responsibility for supporting Team USA and preparing the delegation.

What remains undecided

A completed proposal would need to identify the capital being raised, the rights included and the financial interest an investor would receive. The public reporting reviewed Tuesday does not settle those terms.

For now, the verified development is a search for financing and a new commercial model, with preliminary partner discussions documented months earlier. The eventual investment structure will determine how the venture’s revenue and responsibilities are divided.
