Cavan Sullivan was 17 years and five days old when he scored against Mexico on October 3, becoming the youngest scorer in U.S. men’s national team history. His route to that record began in Philadelphia, where he joined the Union academy at 10 and worked through its youth teams and Union II before signing a first-team contract at 14.
The goal in the United States’ 3–0 win in Glendale came one week after his senior international debut against Peru. ESPN’s match report confirmed the age record, the latest milestone in a development period that has largely taken place with his hometown club.
Philadelphia before the records
The Union signed Sullivan through 2028 in May 2024. Its announcement documented his academy progression and earlier achievements with the United States’ Under-15 team. He scored four goals and received the Golden Ball at the 2023 Concacaf Under-15 championship, then helped the Union’s Under-17 side win the 2024 Generation adidas Cup.
His older brother Quinn was already a Union first-team player when Cavan signed. In an interview the club published that May, Cavan explained the appeal of staying: “It’s my boyhood club. There’s nothing better than home.”
When Cavan entered against New England on July 17, 2024, Quinn had scored Philadelphia’s fifth goal one minute earlier. MLS recorded Cavan’s age as 14 years and 293 days, breaking Freddy Adu’s league debut record by 13 days. The Union won 5–1.
A larger role in 2026
The debut established how early Sullivan reached MLS. His production in 2026 shows how his role has grown. In its September 26 report on his U.S. debut, MLS listed seven goals and 12 assists in 24 league appearances that season. Those figures describe his club record at that reporting date.
The international breakthrough has followed during the same year. Sullivan debuted against Peru shortly before his 17th birthday and scored against Mexico shortly after it. He has joined a U.S. side in which fellow MLS academy graduate Julian Hall has also made an immediate scoring contribution.
The Manchester City pathway
ESPN reported on September 17 that Sullivan’s Union agreement contains a clause allowing him to join Manchester City when he turns 18 in 2027. That reported pathway does not establish a date for a City first-team appearance or guarantee playing time.
Philadelphia’s original announcement described a contract through 2028. Together, the reports explain the agreement under which Sullivan has developed at home and the move connected to his next birthday. His immediate international schedule continues with the United States’ match against Canada on October 6.
