How Josh Allen’s running sustained Buffalo against the Rams

Josh Allen passed for 210 yards and rushed for 121 in Buffalo's 37–34 overtime win on October 12. His dropback record shows how scrambles and gains after the catch offset a limited downfield passing game.

Buffalo uses shotgun with Ty Johnson beside Allen and Alec Anderson as an extra offensive lineman. Fiske, Josaiah Stewart, Kobie Turner and Aaron Donald rush, while Byron Young drops into coverage.

Stewart attacks through the interior and reaches Allen for the recorded eight-yard sack. Four rushers produce pressure on this play. The visible rush path establishes the disruption, while the protection assignment and intended read remain unestablished.

Allen throws behind the line to Johnson as several offensive linemen release ahead of the back. Connor McGovern engages a defender in the receiving lane, and Tylan Grable blocks farther along Johnson’s path. The blocking arrangement establishes the screen.

Johnson turns upfield for 40 yards to the Rams’ 17. The recorded catch starts four yards behind the line and supplies 44 yards after the catch. Donald and Turner attack the pocket with off-ball Landman, producing three rushers. Young follows Johnson’s receiving path. Allen’s platform remains clear through delivery.

Buffalo’s line stays in pass protection as Shakir releases from the right slot toward the middle. Young closes around the right edge, and Allen moves forward through the narrowing pocket to deliver. The approach visibly constrains the throw; Young and Stewart contact Allen after release.

Shakir secures the short-middle target and carries it to the Rams’ 22. Five recorded air yards and 52 yards after the catch account for the 57-yard completion. This is a conventional downfield route with a long receiving gain after the catch, outside the game’s screen category.

Allen starts in an empty shotgun set. Stewart, Turner, Donald and Young rush while Landman remains behind the front during the passing phase. Allen retains the ball and steps into the gap between the interior blocks.

He tucks and accelerates before Young reaches toward him, then continues through midfield for 19 yards. The visible sequence supports an open rushing lane without a prior defensive disruption of the passing platform. A later pursuit or tackle cannot by itself establish a pressure-caused scramble.

Film coverage and classifications

4 examples are developed below. The complete chart retains all 36 quarterback events, including 28 counted dropbacks and 8 supplemental events. Unknown tactical fields remain explicit.

Every quarterback event was matched to the official game situation and sequence in the wide and end-zone Coaches Film views. Tactical observations use inspection of chronological saved frame sequences from authenticated playback. Each play retains its supporting view, footage locator and field observation. Pressure, screens, play action, rush counts and off-ball rush involvement are classified on every primary dropback. Catchability and drops are classified on every eligible receiving target. Credited receptions establish a legal receiving opportunity and no-drop outcome; those derived judgments are labeled separately from film observations. No validated manual snap-to-release interval was measured. Footage locators refer to the linked DAZN edition; no footage is reproduced.

Read the detailed game analysis

With the game tied in overtime, Allen turned second-and-7 at Buffalo's 41 into a 19-yard scramble. On the next snap, he ran another 13 yards around the left end. Those two plays moved the ball to the Rams' 27, where Buffalo could set up Tyler Bass's winning 45-yard field goal.

The play record classifies the first run as a scramble and the second as a non-scramble quarterback run. That distinction captures the central feature of Allen's night: his contribution extended well beyond the passes that reached receivers. Buffalo won 37–34 at SoFi Stadium on October 12, 2026, with Allen producing 331 gross passing-plus-rushing yards.

Running supplied a different route to production

Allen finished with 10 carries for 121 yards and one touchdown. Eight source-classified scrambles accounted for 107 of those yards. His other two runs supplied 14 yards, including the one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. The play-by-play distinguishes the run outcomes without establishing their intended design.

The late touchdown drive also showed why the distinction mattered. With the score tied at 27, Allen scrambled 15 yards on third-and-5. Later in the possession, he gained 21 yards on second-and-17, reaching the Los Angeles 5. James Cook scored from there, giving Buffalo a 34–27 lead before the Rams answered.

The passing total needs a similar separation. Across Allen's 12 completions, the recorded decomposition is 14 net completed air yards and 196 yards after the catch. The latter supplied 93.3% of his 210 gross passing yards. That describes where the yardage developed; it does not divide credit among the thrower, receiver, blockers and play design.

The after-catch gains also exceeded the nflfastR play-by-play model's expectation on the covered completions. Eleven unpenalized catches produced 190 yards after reception against 73.4 expected yards, a surplus of 10.6 yards per catch. One completion with offensive holding is excluded from this comparison. The model uses the recorded catch location and does not isolate the receiver's work or grade Allen's decisions.

A shorter passing mix than the first four games

Ty Johnson's 40-yard screen reception began four yards behind the line of scrimmage and included 44 yards after the catch. Ray Davis's 31-yard screen reception began seven yards behind the line and included 38 yards afterward. In overtime, Khalil Shakir turned a pass recorded five yards downfield into a 57-yard gain, with 52 yards after reception.

Allen attempted six of his 19 passes behind the line, a 31.6% share. In his first four 2026 games, that share was 16.8% over 119 throws. Average target depth fell from 9.8 to 7.6 yards. Those are changes in this game's recorded distribution, not proof of a deliberate tactical adjustment.

The deeper attempts supplied the clearest complication. Allen completed none of the three throws traveling at least 20 air yards. One was intercepted by Jaylen Watson late in the first half. He completed one of two throws in the 10–19-yard band, the 17-yard pass to Shakir during the fourth-quarter go-ahead drive. The short gains and running carried the production; the three deep throws produced no completions.

Passing and running against pressure

Five visible screens supply 83 of 210 credited passing yards, representing 39.5% of the total. Allen completes all five attempts. His other throws produce 7 completions on 14 attempts for 127 yards.

The screens explain part of Allen’s production through organized short receptions and blocking. Shakir’s 57-yard overtime gain adds a different route to receiving yardage: the line protects, Shakir runs toward the middle, and most of the gain follows the catch. Allen’s final 19-yard scramble begins through an interior opening before Young pursues. That sequence cautions against treating every scramble as a pressure-driven escape.

Allen faced pressure on 10 of 28 dropbacks (35.7%). He completed 2 of 6 passes for 83 yards, threw an interception and took one sack. Three scrambles added 46 yards, while five scrambles without pressure gained 61. The two pressured completions include Shakir’s 57-yard overtime gain. Running supported the offense both when defenders disrupted the pocket and when an open lane invited Allen to leave it.

The whole dropback record changes the assessment

Allen's 28 counted dropbacks generated 19.03 expected points added: 9.20 from 19 throws, minus 1.88 on one sack, and 11.70 from eight scrambles. Throws plus sacks averaged 0.366 EPA per event, close to Stafford's 0.353. Including the scrambles raised Allen's combined average to 0.680, against 0.286 in his 136-dropback pregame baseline. Seventeen of the 28 game plays had positive EPA.

EPA measures the outcome of the whole play in its game context. Allen's nine-yard scramble in the third quarter also carried a defensive-holding penalty, while an overtime completion lost field position through offensive holding. Those penalty effects remain in the counted events. Five related no-play penalties are preserved in the ledger and excluded from the primary dropback rate.

Third-down outcomes supplied counterevidence to the high overall EPA. Allen converted two of seven third-down dropbacks, compared with 16 of 33 in his first four games. A third-and-13 scramble gained nine yards and also received an automatic first down through defensive holding. That penalty advanced the possession, but the source does not count it as a conventional third-down conversion.

The completion model offers a narrower view of the throwing. On its 18 covered attempts, nflfastR puts Allen 1.4 percentage points below expected completion, compared with 6.0 points above expectation before the game. One official incompletion has no model value. Keeping that attempt in his 12-for-19 official line while excluding it from the model calculation prevents the two denominators from being confused.

The finish still depended on more than the quarterback

Shakir's overtime catch brought Buffalo to the Los Angeles 22, but Cook lost a fumble on the next play. The Rams then reached field-goal range before Greg Rousseau blocked Harrison Mevis's 48-yard attempt. That special-teams play gave Buffalo the possession on which Allen's final two runs set up Bass.

Allen's 121 rushing yards, the receiving gains after the catch and the final field goal all belong in the explanation of the win. His interception, early sack and uncompleted deep attempts belong there too. The record supports a productive night built through several kinds of quarterback involvement, with downfield passing a clear limitation.

The eligible denominator is counted dropbacks for rush, pressure and action fields, and counted throws for throwaway fields. Catchability/drop retain the full throw population but separately exclude verified intentional throwaways from receiving eligibility. Not-applicable values and unresolved observations are shown separately. A classified-subset split does not establish the full-game rate.

Film field definitions and source types
Screen
A pass with a visible planned catch-and-run blocking arrangement: one or more blockers position or release ahead of a short receiver while that receiver receives near or behind the line. Include running-back, receiver and tight-end screens. A checkdown or negative air-yard pass alone does not establish a screen. A screen may also contain visible run-action mechanics, so the two labels may overlap. Counted throws, sacks and scrambles may be classified when screen mechanics are directly visible. An unthrown screen on a sack or scramble needs positive visual evidence. Completion-based screen production uses throws separately.
Play-action mechanics
The quarterback visibly presents or fakes a handoff, pitch or run-option exchange to a potential runner, then retains the ball for a passing phase. The defense need not react successfully to the fake. Under-center, pistol and shotgun run presentations can qualify. A back crossing the formation, a normal pass set or a shotgun flag alone does not qualify; describing a visible exchange does not establish the called playbook concept or an RPO provider flag. Counted dropbacks, including a subsequent sack or scramble. Do not infer a specific playbook call or whether a visible mesh was called RPO.
Initial rushers
Distinct defenders attacking the line or quarterback in the initial pass-rush phase after the snap. Record their jersey identities and paths. A defender backing into coverage is not a rusher even if aligned near the line. Describe the observed initial phase separately from delayed rush and later pursuit; a four-man initial rush may become a five-man total rush.
Total rushers
Distinct defenders intentionally attacking the pocket before pass release, sack, or the quarterback clearly commits to an open-field scramble. Include a delayed rush or a defender who attacks after his assigned eligible receiver stays in protection. Exclude coverage defenders and spies who begin pursuit only after a scramble commitment. Record any uncertain timing as null instead of resolving it from formation or tackle involvement. Source-independent TSP manual count. Requires both views or an equally complete view and named paths; does not establish pressure or a provider blitz flag.
Five-plus rush
Derived only from a verified total_pass_rushers count: total_pass_rushers >=5. Call it five-plus rush, with this definition visible, rather than claiming an FTN/PFF/NGS blitz match. Counted dropbacks; rate denominator is classified counted dropbacks, with unknowns displayed.
Role-based blitz
Separate TSP off-ball/defensive-back rush involvement: an identified defender operating from an off-ball linebacker or defensive-back role deliberately attacks the passing pocket before the quarterback decision. Identity may be established by jersey/roster or an unambiguous pre-snap position and continuous path. A replacement rush can qualify with only four total rushers; a normal on-ball edge rusher is not automatically an extra blitzer. Coverage, a spy hold or pursuit beginning only after open-field scramble commitment does not qualify. Pre-snap rush presentation alone is insufficient. A visible role/path label, separate from total-rusher count and five-plus rush. Use yes/no when the pertinent defenders and timing are established, uncertain/null only for an actual role/path/timing visibility gap. This field does not claim a provider blitz match or certify the called defensive scheme.
Pressure before decision
TSP pre-decision defensive pressure on a counted dropback: a sack, defender contact affecting the passing action, or an immediate sack threat visibly constraining the quarterback before release or open-field scramble commitment. A hurry can be supported by defensive evasion, a reset or displacement of the platform, altered delivery/arm slot, or urgent release against an approaching or free rusher. A visible immediate threat can support pressure without proof of the quarterback's intended progression or thoughts. A normal rollout, ordinary pocket movement, a blocked nearby defender or rusher count alone is insufficient. Keep pressure subtype, threatening defender/path and event ordering in evidence notes; pressure does not assign protection fault. Counted dropbacks, including sacks and scrambles, with actual pre-decision event timing. This is a stated TSP manual definition. PFF pressure, official QB hits and NGS modeled pressures may use different conventions and remain attributed to their actual sources. A recorded QB hit alone does not fill this manual field.
Pressure evidence
Jersey identity, path, timing and directly visible effect supporting true or false pressure. Null means not classified; an empty array must not be read as proof of a clean pocket.
Contact after release
Visible physical contact on the quarterback after the ball leaves his hand. Record the source window and whether it is separately present in the official QB-hit field. This field does not independently resolve pre-release pressure.
Throwaway
An intentional disposal with directly visible placement away from any plausible receiving attempt, supported by receiver locations and quarterback action. An incompletion outside the boundary, a ball thrown through contact, or a target name alone is insufficient. Thrown passes only; keep null on sacks, scrambles and unavailable receiving views.
Pass deflected at line
A visible defender touches the flight of the pass near the line before it reaches the targeted receiving area. Do not infer a deflection from an unusually short pass, the PBP pass-defense field or a raised arm alone. Thrown passes only.
Catchability
A realistic legal physical receiving opportunity at the actual arrival. A credited completed reception establishes catchable for this receiving-opportunity field, including difficult or exceptional catches. On an unsuccessful target, judge placement, receiver reach and defensive alteration from the actual sequence. Uncatchable means the actual ball affords no realistic legal opportunity. Catchability is separate from accuracy, optimal placement, expected handling and drop responsibility. The full intervening ball flight need not be reconstructed to resolve the arrival opportunity. Thrown receiving targets, excluding positively verified intentional throwaways and spikes. Credited completed receptions may be resolved with explicit official_outcome evidence. Unsuccessful targets require actual arrival evidence. Do not equate this TSP judgment with a provider field or accuracy grade.
Drop
A failed reception of an aimed pass that presents a realistic legal receiving opportunity, attributable to receiver handling rather than decisive defensive disruption. Verified completed receptions of the credited target are no-drop by the official outcome, including difficult or exceptional catches. On unsuccessful targeted passes, assign true only when the arrival, receiver action and relevant defensive contact establish a catchable opportunity that the receiver failed to secure. A touch of the hands alone does not establish a drop; an interception alone does not rule one out. All 73 counted analytical throws remain in the population audit. Receiving eligibility, resolved drop judgments, unresolved eligible judgments and not-applicable attempts are reported separately. No drop values on sacks or scrambles. A targeted tipped pass or hit-as-thrown pass is not automatically excluded: judge the resulting receiving opportunity. Drops per pass attempt and drops per resolved catchable target use separately named denominators. Successful two-point receptions remain in the separate supplemental scope.
Snap-to-release interval
Optional manual interval between the visible initial movement of the snapped ball and the first frame in which the ball leaves the quarterback hand. Use the same camera angle for both events and log its timestamp/precision. Editing cuts, uncertain frame timing or a missing snap/release leave null. Do not label this FTN or NGS time to throw. Actual thrown passes only. Sacks and scrambles need separately named decision intervals, not a fake release time.
Formation and motion
Describe visible alignment, motion and shifts without converting them to a called protection or intended read. Offensive left/right always means the offense facing its opponent goal, not camera screen left/right.
Visible routes and blocks
Describe visible receiver stems/breaks and block engagements. A route appearance, quarterback head turn or a receiver becoming open does not independently establish prescribed progression, coverage responsibility, protection error or missed read.

Official and recorded outcomes stay separate from TSP film observations. nflfastR EPA and expected YAC are model outputs; they do not isolate quarterback responsibility. Provider observations retain their provider definitions.

Pressure evidence
Young 0, Donald 99, Turner 91 and Fiske 55 stay engaged in pass protection while Allen makes his ordinary set and release; Landman 53 and Speights 48 retreat with the receiving action. The paired passing phases show the four front attackers engaged in blocks and Allen making an ordinary delivery, supporting the retained pressure=false judgment.
Contact after release
No. No contact on Allen is observed after the release in either reviewed angle.
Throwaway
No. A downfield pass is directed to Knox in the middle/end-zone receiving area, not an observed intentional disposal.
Pass deflected at line
No. No line-of-scrimmage touch or deflection is observed.
Catchability
Catchable. Knox advances into the end zone, extends both arms and dives toward the pass. The ball arrives within his extended receiving reach with a realistic legal opportunity to secure it; the wide arrival view shows his hands meeting the target area inside the end zone. The required adjustment is real but does not remove catchability under the v 0.3 reasonable-effort rubric.
Drop
Yes. The ball escapes the attempted acquisition as Knox descends and then rebounds away on/after the landing. Lake 37 closes behind him, but the receiving sequence does not show a defender striking Knox's hands, the ball or his acquisition area before it fails. The failed opportunity is attributable to handling rather than visible decisive defensive disruption.
Snap-to-release interval
Unclassified. No validated snap-to-release interval was measured. The displayed UI clock is a footage locator.
Formation and motion
Shotgun with Cook 4 beside Allen and extra offensive lineman Anderson 70.
Visible routes and blocks
Knox releases into the deep middle/end-zone area; the four observed pass rushers remain engaged by blockers and Allen releases from a stable platform.

4 distinct pass rushers are observed before the passing decision. The observed rush does not include an off-ball defender joining the pocket attack. The visible passing platform remains free of defensive disruption through the decision.

Pressure before decision
No. Allen has a separated delivery platform and throws with the front held away; no visible contact, avoidance move or closing path constrains the delivery.
Pressure evidence
The five attacking paths are engaged through Allen’s directly visible ordinary delivery after the back fake. Dense end-zone 00:11:15–17 shows Allen set to deliver with the attacking paths engaged in blocks; Speights 48 is sustained by Knox 88 and the platform stays clear. This supports the retained pressure=false judgment.
Contact after release
No. Dense end-zone 00:11:17–18 retains Allen upright and clear of contact through the visible Cook receiving aftermath.
Throwaway
No. The ball is directed to Cook in the left flat and he controls the pass.
Pass deflected at line
Unclear. No complete ball path inspected to certify an absence of a line touch. The selected images show the intended flat pass but not every initial ball-flight frame.
Catchability
Catchable. Cook visibly receives within ordinary reach in bounds and advances with control before going out. This resolves ordinary legal opportunity only, not an accuracy grade.
Drop
No. Cook visibly controls and retains the pass as he turns upfield and goes out; no failed reception on this target.

Five-plus rush
No. Derived from the independently observed four-rusher total.
Role-based blitz
No. The off-ball defenders stay in coverage during the dropback; later pursuit after Allen becomes a runner is not a pass rush.
Pressure before decision
No. At the point Allen lowers the ball and steps into the open left gap, the four rushers are still engaged. Young 0 releases and dives behind him after run commitment, so that pursuit does not establish pre-commit pressure.

No. The wide snap sequence shows a direct shotgun receive and passing drop, with no handoff/pitch presentation toTy Johnson 26.
Initial rushers
4. Four front paths 0/91/two interior defenders attack the pocket. Stewart 10's edge contact is with Knox 88 before following the releasing receiver; this receiving collision is excluded from the passing-phase pocket rush count.
Total rushers
4. The same four remain the pocket attackers through release. Stewart 10 follows Knox into receiving space; Landman 53, Curl 3 and Watson 35 follow routes without joining the pocket.
Five-plus rush
No. Derived from the directly observed four-rusher passing-phase total.
Role-based blitz
No. Landman 53, Curl 3 and Watson 35 stay in the receiving area. The ambiguous Stewart 10 path begins from the operational edge, not an off-ball blitz role.
Pressure before decision
No. Wide 00:15:53–00:15:56 shows the front engaged and Allen delivering from a stable separated platform, with no observed defensive avoidance or contact before release.
Pressure evidence
Young 0, Turner 91 and the two interior front paths stay engaged through Allen's ordinary set and release; Stewart 10 collides with Knox and then follows his route. End-zone 00:16:07–11 shows an ordinary upright set and release with the four pocket attackers blocked; the retained pressure=false flag has explicit negative evidence.
Contact after release
No. Allen remains upright and visibly untouched in the immediate release/flight interval at end-zone 00:16:10–11 and paired wide 00:15:56–58.
Throwaway
No. Allen deliberately targets Knox 88’s end-zone route rather than visibly discarding the ball away from the receiving play.
Pass deflected at line
Unclear. No full QB aftermath or complete initial ball flight is inspected, so no negative contact or line-touch flag is assigned. The end-zone camera/header removes the quarterback or initial flight from portions of the inspected interval.
Catchability
Uncatchable. The ball passes beyond Knox's extended receiving reach at the back-left boundary. Consecutive wide samples 0079-0082 and end-zone samples 0127-0130 show the receiver stretching back and landing empty beyond the white line without a realistic legal opportunity to secure this placement.
Drop
No. The visible failure is placement beyond the receiving area and legal boundary, rather than loss of a controlled or realistically securable ball. No acquisition or subsequent handling loss is visible.
Snap-to-release interval
Unclassified. No validated snap-to-release interval was measured. The displayed UI clock is a footage locator.

Later receiver pursuit is excluded.
Five-plus rush
No. Total distinct attackers = 3, below the five-plus threshold.
Role-based blitz
Yes. Landman 53 begins off-ball and attacks through the offensive-left gap toward Allen before release. This qualifies as a role-based blitz even with only three total attackers.
Pressure before decision
No. The three actual attackers remain engaged by blockers through Allen's ordinary upright throw. The paired snap-to-release sequence shows space around his throwing platform, without contact, evasive movement or a free immediate path that visibly changes delivery.
Contact after release
No. Allen remains upright and untouched through his follow-through and the immediately visible aftermath in both angles; the three rushers remain separated from him by engaged blockers.
Throwaway
No. The short pass is directed to Johnson 26, who secures it and runs upfield.
Pass deflected at line
No. The dense end-zone throw sequence shows the ball leaving Allen toward Johnson behind the line with no defender entering or contacting that short flight path; the wide view confirms the same direct path to the receiver.
Catchability
Catchable. Johnson visibly secures the target and retains the ball during the run.
Drop
No. The matched target is completed and retained; no failed receiving opportunity occurs on this target.
Snap-to-release interval
Unclassified. No validated snap-to-release interval was measured. The displayed UI clock is a footage locator.
Formation and motion
Allen is in shotgun at BUF 43 with Johnson 26 offset to his offensive right. A receiver crosses behind the quarterback before the snap and continues toward the offensive left. The end-zone view shows Young 0 outside the offensive-right tackle and Landman 53 aligned off the line before his rush.

No. Landman 53 and Lake 37 retreat with the receiving action; no off-ball linebacker or defensive back attacks the pocket before release.
Pressure before decision
No. Allen maintains his set platform through delivery at 36:49–53. Interior rushers remain contained and edge 0 is engaged outside 68/64 rather than breaking into the quarterback’s space before release. Raised hands and later proximity do not show a hurry or constrained delivery in this sequence.
Contact after release
Unclear. The receiver-following camera does not retain the complete quarterback aftermath in the inspected evidence.
Throwaway
No. Allen targets Kincaid’s visible short-left route.
Pass deflected at line
Unclear. The inspected selected images do not establish an uninterrupted initial-ball-flight observation.
Catchability
Catchable. Kincaid receives within ordinary reach in-field, brings the ball to his body and retains it into the closing tackle; this resolves receiving opportunity without an accuracy grade.
Drop
No. Kincaid visibly controls and retains the ordinary receiving action into the tackle.

Pressure before decision
Yes. The outside defender closes into Allen’s platform;Allen escapes right away from that path and delivers while moving, with the pursuing defender immediately behind.
Pressure evidence
An outside defensive-back attack closes into the quarterback platform and Allen moves right away from it before his deep throw. Direct close path, avoidance movement and delivery are visible in the end-zone sequence.

Throwaway
No. The throw follows Coleman’s deep-right route to the contested receiving point.
Pass deflected at line
Unclear. The complete initial flight from release was not inspected continuously.
Catchability
Uncatchable. At the arrival, Watson 35 jumps in front of Coleman 0 and acquires the ball above his own helmet. Coleman is lower and behind that acquisition point; the ball arrives above and ahead of his available receiving reach in the paired frames. The physical separation supports Uncatchable here, rather than treating the interception outcome itself as a catchability rule.
Drop

Play-action mechanics
No. Allen takes the shotgun snap directly into a passing posture while Ray Davis 7 remains in protection; no visible run-fake presentation.
Initial rushers
5. Five front defenders attack the protection after the snap; the additional aligned edge defender 10 retreats into coverage.

Pressure before decision
Unclear. Young 0's edge approach reaches the vicinity of Allen during the delivery phase; selected views do not settle whether it disrupts the platform or arm before release.
Contact after release
Unclear. The camera pans toward the catch and the close edge approach is not continuously resolved after release.
Throwaway
No. The pass is directed to Kincaid 86 in the end zone and he controls it.
Pass deflected at line
Unclear. No validated continuous ball-flight/line-deflection review was performed; successful completion alone does not prove absence of a tip.
Catchability

The throw, sack and scramble totals reconcile to all counted dropbacks. All eligible events have EPA values. No-play penalties, two-point attempts, spikes and kneels are excluded. The other-run category does not establish intended play design.

The pregame event EPA includes 2 receiver-fumble events. nflfastR's receiver-fumble-adjusted QB EPA changes that baseline from +0.286 to +0.337 per dropback; current-game EPA is unchanged. Neither value isolates quarterback responsibility.

The situations behind the average

The same exclusions apply to the game and each player’s pooled four-game baseline. Counts stay alongside rates because these subsets are small.

Success means positive event EPA. Third- and fourth-down conversions use the source’s standardized converted flags on quarterback dropbacks; other team plays are outside this subset. Automatic first-down penalties do not count in the conversion numerator, while the eligible penalized dropback remains in the denominator. Those penalty first downs are recorded separately in the downloads. Red zone means a pre-snap position at or inside the opponent’s 20. Seven or more yards to go is the stated threshold for this long-yardage comparison. Situations overlap.

Game third-down dropbacks include 1 automatic first-down penalty event(s). Red-zone passing excludes non-scramble quarterback runs; Allen’s rushing touchdown is outside that passing count.

After-catch production against the model

Compare observed YAC with nflfastR expected YAC on the same covered completions. The primary comparison excludes penalized and lateral receptions; the sensitivity column retains all counted covered completions.

The model covers 12 of 12 completions. Missing model values remain missing. Stafford’s three goal-line touchdown catches are excluded by the model’s location eligibility; Allen’s penalized completion is excluded only from the primary comparison.

This is the nflfastR play-by-play model, separate from NFL Next Gen Stats tracking. It uses recorded catch location and estimates expected gain after reception. It does not divide credit among the quarterback, receivers, blocking, defense and play design.

League window: 2026-09-09 through 2026-10-05; 64 games and 32 teams. It is a pooled play average, not an equally weighted quarterback average, opponent adjustment or talent ranking. The source-classified dropback population also includes non-QB trick-play passers.

PFF’s reported game observations

PFF’s game review reports drops and throwaways alongside first-down-marker percentages and time to throw. These observations use the provider’s own definitions.

Published measureGame value
Dropped passes1
Throwaways1
Throws short of the first-down marker47.4%
Throws past the first-down marker47.4%
PFF average snap-to-throw time3.51 seconds

These are PFF’s preliminary observations, separate from official statistics and nflfastR calculations. Its public review lists Stafford with 382 passing yards; the official gamebook records 383 and remains the authority for passing totals.

The Bills’ official recap identifies the 40-yard completion to Ty Johnson and 31-yard completion to Ray Davis as screens. Together, these two completions supplied 71 of Allen’s 210 passing yards, or 33.8%. Their recorded yardage consists of minus 11 net completed air yards and 82 yards after the catch. These are two verified examples, not a complete screen count. The play IDs and source are included in the tactical-observations download.

PFF’s timing and first-down-marker percentages are displayed as published. Eligible observation counts are not supplied here, so no counts are inferred from those percentages. PFF timing remains separate from NFL Next Gen Stats. Throws short of or past the marker do not identify screens or play action.

Receiver separation at the catch or incompletion

NFL Next Gen Stats records the distance between each displayed receiver and the nearest defender when the pass is caught or falls incomplete. These game averages add receiving context to the quarterback’s line.

The displayed receiver averages remain separate, without a pooled quarterback average or a season comparison.

Separation at the catch or incompletion cannot by itself establish route quality, coverage assignment, a missed read or quarterback decision quality. The complete target and outcome ledger remains available below.
