Stewart escaped one bases-loaded threat before creating another

Brock Stewart stranded Bubic’s two runners with a three-pitch strikeout, then allowed the go-ahead single in the sixth. His 12 pitches and intentional walk are separated.

Sal Frelick took a 98.4-mph fastball for strike three with the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Brock Stewart had put him behind with a called cutter and a fastball miss, completing a three-pitch strikeout that stranded all three Brewers.

The escape did not carry into the sixth. Stewart hit David Hamilton, then allowed William Contreras’ RBI single after an intentional walk to Brice Turang. Milwaukee took a 5–4 lead and eventually won NLCS Game 2, 7–4, on October 12.

Stewart recorded two outs across two innings, allowing two hits, one earned run and one walk with one strikeout. His physical ledger contains 12 pitches. The intentional walk added a batter and an official walk without four delivered pitches, a distinction essential to understanding his six batters faced.

A short appearance with more sinkers and sweepers

Stewart threw four sinkers, four sweepers, two cutters and two four-seamers. His primary baseline includes 373 pitches in 27 Dodgers relief appearances, May 6 through September 26. The four-seamer’s share fell from 37.0% in that sample to 16.7% here, while sinkers and sweepers each occupied one-third of the outing.

The two four-seamers still supplied the central finish. After the cutter put Frelick behind, a 96.5-mph fastball drew a miss and the 98.4-mph fastball was taken for strike three. Stewart’s only swing-and-miss came in that confrontation, and three pitches across the outing became called strikes.

He entered the fifth with Yelich at second, Mitchell at first and two outs. Pratt’s ground-ball single loaded the bases before Frelick’s strikeout. Stewart’s full outing therefore contains both an additional baserunner and a successful finish, rather than an uninterrupted bases-loaded rescue.

The sixth-inning runner sequence changed the score

Hamilton reached on a hit-by-pitch to begin the sixth. A fielding error charged to Freddie Freeman on a pickoff attempt helped Hamilton advance, and Chourio’s groundout moved him to third. Stewart then intentionally walked Turang before Contreras singled on the first physical pitch of his at-bat.

Official scoring charged Stewart an earned run despite the fielding error in that sequence. Earned-run reconstruction and the visible route around the bases answer different questions; the final line must follow the official record. Tanner Scott subsequently stranded Turang and Contreras with two strikeouts.

Stewart’s three measured balls in play averaged 87.1 mph, with one hard-hit ball. Those contacts and the hit-by-pitch carried more explanatory weight than the 16.7% whiff rate from one miss in six swings. His appearance shows a decisive strikeout followed by a separate failure to prevent a new runner from scoring, with the intentional walk kept outside the physical pitch count.

The official final MLB record supplies events, final calls and the line. Baseball Savant’s complete Game 2 feed supplies all 12 physical pitches. Pitch ID, order, classification and pre-pitch count reconcile, including final ABS decisions. These records contain 6 batters, 2 integer outs and 1 strikeouts. In baseball notation, .1 means one out and .2 two outs. Source records current as of October 13, 2026. One intentional walk adds a batter and an official walk without any physical pitch. Four automatic intentional-ball events are outside this 12-pitch ledger.

The Statcast Search baseline is 373 physical pitches in 27 regular-season relief appearances for Los Angeles Dodgers, 2026-05-06 through 2026-09-26. Each game total reconciles with the official appearance log. The target game and postseason work are excluded. Same club and role in the 2026 regular season.

Whiff rate means misses divided by physical swing attempts. Swinging strikes, blocked swinging strikes, caught foul tips and missed bunts count as conventional tracking whiffs. A caught foul tip involves bat contact; it is kept distinct from a literal swing that misses the ball. Fouls, bunt attempts and balls put into play enter the attempt denominator. Both outing and baseline use the same definitions. Called strikes and completed strikeout plate appearances are separate. Chase uses ball-center coordinates outside a 17-inch-wide rectangle and each pitch’s recorded vertical boundaries. Only complete coordinates enter the zone denominator. Savant’s separate zone flag remains in the CSV and detail rather than replacing that geometric definition.

Speed is mph, spin rpm, extension feet and movement inches. Induced vertical break describes movement relative to a gravity-only path. Location and zone boundaries are feet in catcher view. Numbered markers preserve exact coordinates and are not ball size. Release, location, spin, extension and movement measurements are complete for all outing pitches. Contact and expected-outcome measurements can be unavailable and remain missing in the detail and CSV. 3 of 3 balls put into play have measured exit speed. Hard-hit means at least 95 mph; the baseline has 65 measured contacts among 65. Expected outcomes are Savant model estimates, not actual results. The comparisons are descriptive and do not establish intention, fatigue, injury or a durable trend.
