Shoki Oda Chooses U.S. Baseball, With College Among His Options
The 18-year-old Yokohama High School pitcher is weighing an American university against signing with an MLB organization.

Japanese high school pitcher Shoki Oda intends to continue his baseball career in the United States, with an American university still among his options.
The 18-year-old Yokohama High School right-hander announced his decision Thursday. He is considering a minor league contract with an MLB organization or playing college baseball, according to World Baseball Network and MLB.com.
Oda had been expected to attract first-round interest in Japan’s October 22 professional draft. He met with all 12 Nippon Professional Baseball clubs before choosing the American route.
World Baseball Network reported that Oda wants to begin learning English and adapting to communication with teammates and coaches before potentially reaching the major leagues. His experience representing Japan at September’s Under-18 Asian Championship also influenced his interest in playing abroad.
Oda helped Yokohama reach the Summer Koshien semifinals and struck out 12 over 8⅔ innings in his first start at the tournament.
He has announced his preferred destination country, but has not announced an MLB signing or a college commitment.
