Novak Djokovic won the 102nd tour-level title of his career Tuesday, October 6, when Alex de Minaur retired injured early in the second set of the China Open final in Beijing.
Djokovic took the opening set 7-6 (3). Both players then received medical attention, with de Minaur leaving the court for treatment on his groin, the ATP Tour reported.
The Australian returned with his left thigh strapped and held serve to begin the second set, but could not continue. The match ended at 7-6 (3), 0-1, retirement.
The victory gave Djokovic his seventh China Open title and extended his record at the tournament to 34-0. AP reported that his 102 tour-level singles titles put him one behind Roger Federer’s 103, with Jimmy Connors leading the Open Era list on 109.
AAP-Reuters, via ABC News, reported that Djokovic apologized to de Minaur for the way the final ended and wished him a quick recovery.
