Austin Smotherman won his first PGA Tour title in his 100th career start, closing with a 3-under 68 to take the Bank of Utah Championship on October 4. His 26-under total of 258 at Black Desert Resort was two shots better than Doug Ghim’s.
Smotherman’s lead narrowed to one after a double bogey at the 13th, where his approach plugged near a bunker’s lip. He answered with a birdie at the reachable par-4 14th and added another at the 16th, according to the Associated Press report published by PGA Tour.
Ghim finished alone in second after a final-round 69. Trace Crowe and David Ford tied for third, closing with rounds of 66 and 64, respectively.
The victory gives Smotherman a two-year exemption and moves him to No. 51 in the FedExCup Fall standings. His final total also broke the tournament’s 72-hole scoring record.
