Zheng Qinwen became the first Chinese player to win the China Open singles title Sunday, defeating Mirra Andreeva 7–5, 6–4 in Beijing.

The victory gave Zheng her first WTA 1000 championship and her first tour title since October 2024. She entered the event as a wild card after a period disrupted by form and fitness problems following elbow surgery.

Andreeva had chances to claim the opening set. Zheng saved three set points as she recovered to 5–5, then took the remaining games to move ahead, according to the WTA’s final report.

The second set stayed on serve until Zheng broke in the ninth game. She completed the match on her first championship point, finishing a tournament that had already made her the event’s first Chinese singles finalist.

The title supplied a home winner at a tournament first played in 2004. It also marked a return to the winners’ circle for the Olympic champion after nearly two years without a tour trophy.

There was a further update Monday: Zheng withdrew from the Wuhan Open with a right shoulder injury and cited the physical demands of the Beijing run. The Associated Press reported the withdrawal a day after the final.

The Wuhan decision changes her immediate schedule while leaving the Beijing result as a significant achievement. Zheng’s next tournament appearance will depend on the condition that prompted her withdrawal.
