Trevor Megill, Pitch by Pitch: NLCS Game 3 Analysis
Megill used 13 four-seamers and five knuckle curves to record the final four outs. His complete ledger preserves the overturned call that extended the last confrontation with Mookie Betts.

Mookie Betts reached a 3–1 count against Trevor Megill with two outs in the ninth. An ABS challenge had already changed Megill’s second pitch from a strike to a ball. Betts fouled off fastballs at 97.9 and 99.2 mph before tipping a 98.8 mph four-seamer into the catcher’s glove for strike three.
That seven-pitch confrontation ended Milwaukee’s 6–2 win and gave Megill the final four outs of NLCS Game 3. He had entered with two outs in the eighth and Shohei Ohtani on first, retiring Will Smith before working a scoreless ninth.
Megill allowed no hits or walks and struck out two on 18 pitches. The season comparison contains 874 physical pitches in 63 regular-season Milwaukee relief appearances from March 29 through September 25.
Season repertoire and Game 3
Scale: 0–100%. Gray: regular season. Blue: Game 3.
Four-seam fastball
Change: +7.6 percentage points.
Knuckle curve
Change: -7.6 percentage points.
A familiar two-pitch repertoire with more fastballs
The mix was 13 four-seamers and five knuckle curves. Fastballs accounted for 72.2% of the outing, compared with 64.6% in the baseline. Their average speed was 98.6 mph against 97.9, while knuckle curves averaged 89.3 against 88.0.
Four-seamers supplied four called strikes and two misses in six attempts. The knuckle curve added one called strike and one miss in two attempts. Across both pitches, the eight swing attempts produced three misses, with five called strikes acquired separately.
The first confrontation required a different finish. Smith took two balls and a fastball strike, missed a knuckle curve and then flew out on another at 88.7 mph. That out stranded Ohtani and allowed Megill to start the ninth with the bases empty.
Pitch measurements and hitter response
| Pitch | Count | Mean mph | Max mph | Mean spin rpm | Induced vertical break in. | Horizontal movement magnitude in. | Misses / attempts | Called strikes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Four-seam fastball | 13 | 98.6 | 99.8 | 2455 | 18.5 | 3.0 | 2 / 6 | 4 |
| Knuckle curve | 5 | 89.3 | 90.2 | 2731 | -1.7 | 2.2 | 1 / 2 | 1 |
All outing pitches have speed, spin, movement, extension and plate-location measurements. Movement uses Savant’s explicit induced-vertical and horizontal fields. Misses include caught foul tips and missed bunts under the event definitions below. Pitch-type movement averages use all pitches of that classification.
Mookie Betts: inning 9
The final strikeout survived a corrected call
Enrique Hernández lined a fastball out to begin the ninth. Edman then took a fastball strike, missed another, fouled off a third and missed an 89.6 mph knuckle curve. The final pitch to Betts was a caught foul tip, which enters the missed-attempt category used consistently in these comparisons.
Betts’ overturned call remains a ball in the ledger and changes the counts before every following pitch. The review creates no additional pitch row. This distinction matters in a seven-pitch plate appearance that otherwise might be reconstructed with the wrong count.
The two balls put into play against Megill left the bat at 87.0 and 92.3 mph. Neither met the 95 mph hard-hit threshold. The combination of those contacts, taken fastballs and three missed attempts explains an efficient finish without requiring a large swing-and-miss sample.
Megill’s four-seam average was 98.8 mph on two pitches in the eighth and 98.6 on 11 in the ninth. The small first sample gives little basis for an inning trend. The ninth-inning record shows how fastballs established Edman’s two-strike count and ultimately finished Betts.

Sources, definitions and limitations
The official final MLB record supplies events, final calls and the line. Baseball Savant’s complete Game 3 feed supplies all 18 physical pitches. Pitch ID, order, classification and pre-pitch count reconcile, including final ABS decisions. These records contain 4 batters, 4 integer outs and 2 strikeouts. In baseball notation, .1 means one out and .2 two outs. Source records current as of October 14, 2026.
The Statcast Search baseline is 874 physical pitches in 63 regular-season relief appearances for Milwaukee Brewers, 2026-03-29 through 2026-09-25. Each game total reconciles with the official appearance log. Target game, postseason work, other clubs and other roles are excluded. 1 baseline pitches lack spin rate; excluded from that measure.
Whiff rate means misses divided by physical swing attempts. Swinging strikes, blocked swinging strikes, caught foul tips and missed bunts count as misses. Fouls, bunt attempts and balls put into play enter the attempt denominator. Both outing and baseline use the same definitions. Called strikes and completed strikeout plate appearances are separate. Chase uses ball-center coordinates outside a 17-inch-wide rectangle and each pitch’s recorded vertical boundaries. Only complete coordinates enter the zone denominator. Savant’s separate zone flag remains in the CSV and detail rather than replacing that geometric definition.
Speed is mph, spin rpm, extension feet and movement inches. Induced vertical break describes movement relative to a gravity-only path. Location and zone boundaries are feet in catcher view. Numbered markers preserve exact coordinates and are not ball size. Release, location, spin, extension and movement measurements are complete for all outing pitches. Contact and expected-outcome measurements can be unavailable and remain missing in the detail and CSV. 2 of 2 balls put into play have measured exit speed. Hard-hit means at least 95 mph; the baseline has 156 measured contacts among 157. Expected outcomes are Savant model estimates, not actual results. The comparisons are descriptive and do not establish intention, fatigue, injury or a durable trend.
Reading the rates
Called strikes plus misses: 8 / 18 physical pitches (44.4%). Swinging-strike rate: 3 / 18 (16.7%). Whiff rate: 3 / 8 swing attempts (37.5%). Chase: 7 / 13 pitches outside the ball-center rectangle (53.8%). All 18 pitches have usable zone coordinates. Rates use final corrected calls and retain caught foul tips in the miss category.
The MLB and Savant raw fields are preserved separately in the downloadable record. Savant plate coordinates define the plotted locations and the zone calculation. MLB coordinates can use a different reference plane. Unavailable expected-outcome values and launch angles remain blank. The CSV distinguishes the pitch result from the completed plate-appearance outcome.
