Caleb Williams completed 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns as the Chicago Bears beat the New England Patriots 30–24 on Thursday at Soldier Field.

Cairo Santos’ 58-yard field goal with 1:34 remaining gave Chicago a 30–21 lead. Andy Borregales answered from 47 yards with 37 seconds left, but Rome Odunze recovered New England’s ensuing onside kick. Williams then took a knee before the game ended.

Luther Burden III caught four passes for 130 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown with 14 seconds left in the first half. Chicago led 20–14 at halftime after Drake Maye answered with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Rhamondre Stevenson as time expired.

Williams’ 12-yard touchdown pass to Colston Loveland extended Chicago’s lead to 27–14 in the third quarter. Maye brought New England within six with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Eli Raridon.

Maye finished 24 of 31 for 321 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter. Stevenson had five catches for 93 yards.

How Chicago Kept the Lead

New England’s first possession ended on downs after six plays and 23 yards. Kyler Gordon sacked Maye for a one-yard loss on fourth-and-five at the Chicago 45. Santos’ 43-yard field goal then opened the scoring. The Patriots’ next two possessions ended in punts, while Chicago drove 74 yards on five plays for D’Andre Swift’s four-yard touchdown and a 10–0 first-quarter lead.

Maye’s seven-yard rushing touchdown completed a nine-play, 74-yard drive lasting 5:05 across the quarter break. Chicago answered with a nine-play, 30-yard possession and Santos’ 31-yard field goal. D’Marco Jackson then intercepted Maye’s pass intended for Raridon in the end zone, ending New England’s next drive after 53 yards.

Chicago went 80 yards on 10 plays after that turnover, taking 3:11 before Williams’ touchdown pass to Burden. New England answered with two plays covering 66 yards in the half’s final 14 seconds. The second half began with another Chicago touchdown drive: nine plays, 72 yards and 5:19. The Patriots’ response covered 80 yards on nine plays in 5:55, ending with Raridon’s touchdown.

Neither side scored again until the fourth quarter’s final two minutes. Santos hit the right upright on a 53-yard attempt with 8:02 left, after a Chicago possession listed at 13 plays, 51 yards and 6:56. The Patriots’ following three-play possession gained three yards and ended with a punt after Maye was sacked for 10 yards by Dillon Thieneman and Daniel Hardy.

Chicago took over at its own nine and used 12 plays and 4:48 to cover 51 yards before Santos made his 58-yard field goal. New England then drove 46 yards on six plays in 57 seconds before Borregales’ kick. Odunze recovered the onside attempt at the New England 47, and Williams’ kneel was the final offensive play.

Swift finished with 78 yards on 22 carries. Chicago rushed for 116 yards to New England’s 70 and held possession for 32:24 against the Patriots’ 27:36. Hunter Henry caught seven passes for 71 yards for New England; Loveland had seven for 69 and Odunze four for 69 for Chicago.

Postgame Comments

Mike Vrabel on New England’s Performance

In his postgame news conference, Mike Vrabel said New England did not tackle well enough and credited its response to pressure for keeping the offense competitive. On the running game, he said, “we didn’t run the ball well enough.”

Drake Maye on the Interception and Pressure

Maye called his end-zone interception a turning point and said New England had two later chances to take the lead. “I let my team down,” he said. He also said he needed quicker answers against Chicago’s pressure.

Ben Johnson on Chicago’s Composure

In a locker-room speech released by the Bears, Ben Johnson praised his players for staying composed through swings in the game and said, “we made a couple more plays.”

Drives, Downs and Personnel

Fourth-down outcomes separated the teams. New England failed on its only attempt, the opening-drive sack. Chicago converted both: Swift gained five yards on fourth-and-one at the New England 20 in the second quarter, and Williams found Loveland for nine yards on fourth-and-two at the Patriots’ 43 with 9:40 left in the fourth.

The latter conversion extended the drive that ended with Santos’ missed field goal. Chicago nevertheless consumed 6:56 on that possession, then added another 4:48 before its next kick. New England had only the intervening three-play possession before the 58-yarder put it nine points behind.

The Patriots finished 2 for 7 on third down, compared with Chicago’s 4 for 12. The Bears scored touchdowns on three of four red-zone possessions; New England did so on one of two. Jackson’s end-zone interception was the game’s only turnover.

Penalties also changed the available downs and field position. New England was assessed 10 for 71 yards and Chicago nine for 69. On fourth-and-two at the Patriots’ 48 at the start of the fourth quarter, Matt Pryor’s false start moved New England back five yards before it punted. Walter Rouse’s first-quarter holding penalty had erased a three-yard completion and moved the opening drive from midfield to the Patriots’ 40.

Drive clocks reproduce the provider’s start/end record. Action clocks may differ from a drive’s end time. The raw end-clock field is absent for New England’s touchdown at the end of the first half and Chicago’s final kneel drive; the separate scoring record and END GAME identify 0:00. No missing clock is silently filled. Accepted team penalty totals remain separate from all penalty-event entries, which retain declined and no-play wording. Published starters identify the starting personnel; they do not establish every shared snap or a protection assignment.

Net punting averages and the additional return fields come from page 3 of the official NFL gamebook. The compact ESPN tables provide the remaining displayed category records. Fair catches are separate from returned kicks. The gamebook’s New England [TOUCHBACK] entry is an administrative record, not a player or an additional return in the six-return, 149-yard team total.

Passing YDS for each quarterback is gross. The provider passing team-total YDS is net after sacks: New England 310 and Chicago 289, compared with Maye’s 321 and Williams’ 308. Defensive TOT and SOLO combine regular defense and special teams: New England’s 68 total tackles comprise 64 regular and four special-teams tackles; Chicago’s 61 comprise 49 and 12. Solo totals are 38+4 for New England and 32+2 for Chicago. Receiving targets need not equal pass attempts. The official gamebook records no fumbles by either team and no New England interception; empty provider categories do not designate individual DNPs.

C/ATT: completions/attempts; CAR: carries; REC: receptions; TGTS: targets; FUM/LOST/REC: fumbles/lost/recovered; TOT/SOLO: total/solo tackles; TFL: tackles for loss; PD: passes defended; QB HTS: quarterback hits; XP: extra points; TB: touchbacks; In20: punts inside the opponent’s 20; AVG: per-attempt average in the named category; RTG: passer rating. Punting AVG is gross unless explicitly labeled net. Individual sack credits can be fractional. Complete participation comes from the gamebook lists, separate from statistical category appearances.
