Daniil Medvedev returned to competition with a 4–6, 6–4, 6–3 victory over Jan-Lennard Struff at the Shanghai Masters on Saturday.

The fifth seed recovered after losing the opening set and advanced to the third round. The ATP Tour reported that the win improved his career record against Struff to 10–2.

It was Medvedev’s first match since his China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic ended in a disqualification. A ball he hit struck a spectator in the eye, Sky Sports reported.

Medvedev apologised after the incident and said it was accidental. He also forfeited the $285,000 in prize money he would have received for reaching the semifinals in Beijing.

Saturday’s comeback supplies a sporting result after that interruption, but it does not change the disciplinary outcome of the China Open match.

His Shanghai campaign continues in the third round after a match that required him to recover from an early deficit rather than protect a straight-sets lead.
