Boston and Concepcion give Browns’ passing game a rookie lift

Denzel Boston stretched Pittsburgh’s defense, while KC Concepcion Jr. helped move the chains. Their production is becoming part of Cleveland’s winning start.

Denzel Boston gave Cleveland a 60-yard gain that helped produce a touchdown against Pittsburgh. KC Concepcion Jr. contributed catches on the possession that ended with the winning field goal. The Browns’ rookie receivers are becoming part of how Deshaun Watson moves the offense, and Thursday’s 27–24 victory showed their contributions at different points in the game.

Boston finished with four receptions for 89 yards. Concepcion added five for 64. Together, they accounted for 153 of Watson’s 268 passing yards, or 57.1 percent, calculated from the official game totals. That figure describes this game, rather than their share across the season.

Boston gives Cleveland a downfield gain

Boston’s longest reception came early in the second quarter on the opening play of a possession. Cleveland continued downfield and finished the drive with Quinshon Judkins’ 2-yard touchdown run. Boston’s catch supplied most of the distance without requiring the offense to assemble a long sequence of shorter gains.

Cleveland’s postgame statistical report put Boston at 284 receiving yards through four games. The club’s Friday reporting also noted that Watson had found him for deep completions in three of those games, with two touchdown catches over the opening four weeks.

Concepcion contributes beyond the biggest play

Concepcion’s night included gains of 21 and 25 yards. He was also among the receivers Watson found on the final possession, alongside Jerry Jeudy and Harold Fannin Jr., as Cleveland moved into range for Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining.

Those contributions give the passing game another receiver who can help advance a possession. Boston had the larger yardage total Thursday, but Concepcion caught more passes. Their value in this game was not dependent on one player supplying every important reception.

An encouraging four-game sample

In the Browns’ Friday report, coach Todd Monken praised Boston’s physical and mental toughness and grouped Concepcion with him when discussing competitiveness through the fluctuations of an NFL game.

Cleveland is 3–1, and the early record provides concrete examples of both rookies contributing. Four games do not establish a permanent distribution of targets. They do establish that Boston and Concepcion have already supplied meaningful plays in a passing offense with several other options.

Calculation note

This analysis uses Cleveland’s official October 1 game totals and October 2 reporting. The 57.1 percent figure is TSP’s calculation of 153 divided by 268. It is a single-game receiving-yard share, not a target or snap share.
