Eagles vs. Panthers Preview: Tanner McKee Starts With a Thin Backfield
Smith and Wicks are available, but Hurts, Barkley and Shipley are out. Philadelphia’s passing adjustments and Carolina’s protection problems shape Sunday’s matchup.

Tanner McKee will make his first start of the 2026 season when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, October 18, at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff is 1 p.m. Eastern, 11 a.m. Mountain Time. Philadelphia is 2-3 after three consecutive losses; Carolina returns from its bye at 2-2.
Jalen Hurts is out, but the change at quarterback is only part of Philadelphia’s offensive problem. Saquon Barkley and Will Shipley are also unavailable, leaving McKee to work with a reshaped backfield. The useful counterweight is the return of DeVonta Smith, who missed the previous two games.
McKee’s challenge begins before the snap
This will be McKee’s third career start and his first outside a regular-season finale. The Eagles say he took the first-team practice repetitions Thursday and Friday, working with offensive coordinator Sean Mannion on the game plan. His limited NFL record includes 597 passing yards, five touchdown passes, one interception and a 61.4 percent completion rate, according to the team’s Thursday report. That is evidence of previous production, although two starts cannot establish what he will do over a larger sample.
McKee identified Carolina’s disguised coverages as a particular challenge. He said Philadelphia could use motion and formations to help uncover the defense’s intentions. That makes the information available before the snap an important part of the matchup, especially while the offense changes quarterbacks.
Carolina has its own adjustment. Former Eagles quarterback Kenny Pickett told the Panthers’ team website that McKee’s different mobility would affect Philadelphia’s approach. Carolina also placed starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on injured reserve before the bye. A new quarterback does not eliminate the Eagles’ opportunity to attack an unsettled secondary.
Pierce gets the opportunity without Barkley
Philadelphia’s Friday injury report lists Barkley out with a hamstring injury and confirms Shipley’s move to injured reserve with a foot injury. Dameon Pierce is in line to lead the backfield, with Carson Steele behind him. Smith and Dontayvion Wicks practiced fully Friday and have no game designation.
The matchup offers a possible route to keep McKee out of long passing situations. Carolina has allowed 156.5 rushing yards per game, according to the Eagles’ weekly statistical preview. Converting that opening into dependable early-down gains would let Philadelphia use more of its playbook. Barkley’s absence means the opportunity comes without its usual lead runner.
Wicks has supplied another way to sustain drives: 14 of his 17 catches have produced first downs, including all seven of his third-down receptions. His availability gives McKee a receiver who has already converted difficult downs this season.
Carter against Young is the other central matchup
Carolina’s offense has averaged 30.3 points and 405.8 yards per game through four games. Bryce Young has nine touchdown passes against two interceptions, while Tetairoa McMillan has averaged 96.3 receiving yards. Philadelphia therefore has more to solve than protecting its backup quarterback.
McMillan entered the bye after catching 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns against Detroit. That performance shows how much Carolina can concentrate its passing production through him, while Chuba Hubbard provides an outlet beyond the receivers with 97.5 scrimmage yards per game.
Jalen Carter supplies a direct way to disrupt that offense. He forced fumbles on both of his sacks against Jacksonville last week. Carolina offensive coordinator Brad Idzik described the need to account for Carter against both the run and pass, including Philadelphia’s use of movement to create openings for him, in the Panthers’ coordinator report.
Jonathan Greenard is available again, but Philadelphia will be without Jalyx Hunt, and A.J. Epenesa is doubtful. Carolina’s right tackle situation also remains unsettled: Monroe Freeling is doubtful, while Taylor Moton was questionable Friday and still needed activation before he could play. Those statuses make the final offensive-line and pass-rush combinations worth checking before kickoff.
