Phillies hire former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as third-base coach

The Philadelphia Phillies have hired former New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as their third-base and infield coach, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced Thursday.

Mendoza joins the staff after Philadelphia resolved Don Mattingly’s previously unsettled future by giving him a two-year contract Wednesday to continue as manager. Mattingly finished the 2026 season with the interim title after replacing Rob Thomson in April.

The appointment returns Mendoza to the National League East after the Mets dismissed him in June. New York was 34–47 when his tenure ended, and Andy Green took over before receiving the permanent job near the end of the season.

Mendoza finished 206–199 across parts of three seasons managing the Mets. His first team reached the 2024 National League Championship Series, where New York lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.

Before becoming the Mets’ manager, Mendoza worked on the New York Yankees’ major league coaching staff from 2018 through 2023. His background includes infield instruction and work as a roving defensive instructor in the Yankees’ farm system.

Philadelphia is reshaping its staff after reports Wednesday that hitting coach Kevin Long and infield coach Bobby Dickerson would not return. Mendoza fills the infield assignment as Mattingly prepares for his first full season managing the Phillies.
