Austin Lemieux, the son of Pittsburgh Penguins great Mario Lemieux, shot a six-under-par 66 in Florida on Monday, October 12, to qualify for his first PGA Tour event, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
The 30-year-old amateur tied for second in the 68-player qualifier, finishing two shots behind Adam Long. Lemieux joined Long, Matthew Anderson and Willie Mack III in claiming the four available places. Anderson and Mack also shot 66.
Lemieux’s score matched the No. 66 jersey his father wore with the Penguins. Austin previously played college hockey at Arizona State before pursuing golf, according to Monday Q Info’s Ryan French, who reported his qualification Monday.
In September, Lemieux won the Minor League Golf Tour’s Monday Qualifier Contest No. 5. His three-round total of 200 earned him a $1,000 bonus toward a future PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour qualifier, according to the tour’s published results.
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship runs October 22–25 at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda. The qualifying round was held in Florida ahead of the tournament to give the successful players time to arrange travel.
