British Cycling confirmed Monday that Matthew Richardson has been withdrawn from Great Britain’s squad for the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai.

The championships run October 14–18. Richardson had previously been selected for the team, but the governing body’s statement did not give a reason for the withdrawal.

Richardson switched his international allegiance from Australia to Britain after the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Olympic medalist has been a prominent addition to Britain’s sprint program.

Monday’s announcement changes the squad shortly before the championships begin. It confirms that Richardson will not take part as a member of the selected British team.

The Reuters report distinguished the federation’s confirmed withdrawal from separate reports about the circumstances behind it. British Cycling did not establish those circumstances in its withdrawal statement.

Richardson’s season had already been interrupted by a crash during a World Series keirin event in Japan, which kept him from an anticipated England debut at the Commonwealth Games in July.

Further information about the selection change would need to come from the governing body or the rider. The confirmed development is his removal from the Shanghai squad.
