Wyandotte County drops Chiefs financing vote, challenges state law

Commissioners voted 9–0 on a separate measure targeting parts of Kansas’ sports-authority law after removing proposed financing-oversight changes from the agenda.

Wyandotte County commissioners removed a proposed amendment to the Chiefs’ stadium-financing agreement from Thursday’s agenda without a vote, KCTV5 reported after the meeting.

They instead voted 9–0 to approve a joint charter ordinance and resolution seeking to exempt the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, from parts of House Bill 2466, the state’s sports-authority law.

That action was separate from the financing amendment, which would have reduced local approval requirements for financing documents, STAR bond district boundaries and base tax revenue, and removed a guaranteed seat on a community impact committee.

Mayor Christal Watson said officials had not resolved disagreements with the state over the bond district, local zoning authority and utility costs, according to the Kansas City Business Journal. The separate measure addresses provisions governing the mayor’s role and the authority’s tax treatment, along with local planning, permits and inspections.

The Chiefs’ July announcement described a $3 billion, fully enclosed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, expected to open in 2031 with approximately 70,000 seats. Thursday’s 9–0 vote did not approve the proposed changes to the county’s stadium-financing safeguards.
