Tom Byrne questions roof rule after Ty France flyout in Brewers’ Game 1 win

Byrne says he cannot be sure France’s ball would have gone out, but questions a roof affecting a ninth-inning postseason play.

Tom Byrne questioned whether a ballpark’s roof should affect a postseason play after Ty France’s ninth-inning flyout in Milwaukee’s 3–2 win over San Diego in NLDS Game 1.

Discussing the play on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio Tonight, Byrne stopped short of saying the roof had prevented a home run.

“I still don’t know if that was going out,” Byrne said. “I just hate the idea, Rob, that it could have gone out and may not have because we have a roof.”

France’s drive struck the roof structure at American Family Field and was caught by left fielder Jackson Chourio for the second out of the ninth. The out stood after a review of whether the ball was fair or foul. Milwaukee held its one-run lead to finish the game.

The recording included an FS1 postgame interview with Brewers closer Trevor Megill, who said the home plate umpire had told him the ball remained live.

“Four years in the stadium, I’ve never seen that before,” Megill said.

Megill recorded the final four outs. Chourio’s two-run homer had tied the game in the third inning, and William Contreras put Milwaukee ahead with a solo homer in the seventh. San Diego finished with nine hits and 12 runners left on base.

Another participant in the radio discussion defended roofs as a way to make games more comfortable for fans and said he initially thought France’s ball was heading foul. Byrne acknowledged that he did not expect a change, but said the timing made this play different.

“Again, this happens on Tuesday night in July, I’m not even bringing it up,” he said.

“Should baseball really allow stadiums’ architecture to influence a postseason game?” Byrne asked.

This story covers the roof discussion in the supplied Mad Dog Sports Radio Tonight recording, including an FS1 postgame excerpt with Trevor Megill. It does not cover the full program or full postgame interview.
