Stammen planned six outs for Miller; Murphy credits Brewers’ late at-bats

“We knew we were going to see him for more than one inning,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of Padres closer Mason Miller.

Miller’s two-inning assignment ended with Jackson Chourio’s two-run single in Milwaukee’s 4–3 NLDS Game 2 win on October 4. Miller retired the side in the eighth before walking three hitters in the ninth.

“I think going into the game, uh, we were thinking of, of Mason for six outs anyway,” Padres manager Craig Stammen said. He said San Diego wanted Miller against the top of Milwaukee’s lineup in the eighth and pointed to his quick inning.

Miller was “battling the strike zone there at the end,” Stammen said after the loss.

Murphy credited the late plate appearances by Christian Yelich, Sal Frelick and Gary Sánchez. All three walked before Chourio’s two-out single.

“We gave up all those free bases,” Murphy said when discussing Milwaukee’s pitching earlier in the game.

Murphy said starter Logan Henderson pitched well enough to win, but “it wasn’t at his best.” Henderson walked three and threw a wild pitch in five innings, allowing two runs, one earned.
