Craig Stammen called Ty France’s ninth-inning flyout off the roof a bad break for San Diego after Milwaukee’s 3–2 win in NLDS Game 1 on Saturday. Pat Murphy believed the ball would have gone foul.

“It was a bad break for us,” Stammen said. “It looked like it was a possible home run.”

France’s drive became an out when Jackson Chourio caught it after the deflection. The Padres challenged whether it was fair or foul, but the call stood.

Stammen explained that the ruling depended on where the ball struck the roof. The umpires deemed it fair when it made contact, allowing the catch to count. Murphy said he was standing along the line.

“It was gonna be a foul ball for sure,” Murphy said.

Murphy also credited Chourio for his work before that catch. Chourio’s two-run homer tied the game in the third inning, and Murphy praised his other hard contact and a defensive play that prevented extra bases.

“He really set the tone for us,” Murphy said.

William Contreras broke the tie with a seventh-inning homer. Trevor Megill recorded the final four outs for the save.

Murphy said Jacob Misiorowski’s four-inning start was not the plan. He pointed to reduced velocity and difficulty commanding the fastball as reasons his pitch count climbed. Murphy praised the relievers for handling the remaining innings.

“I feel like we earned it,” Murphy said.

Stammen said the Padres already had a positive attitude toward the next game. He expected both clubs to use their strongest relievers frequently in a five-game series with two scheduled off days, and welcomed Michael King’s next start.

“It always feels good when Michael’s on the mound,” Stammen said.
