Report: Sean Payton to take larger role in Broncos’ play-calling against Chargers

Sean Payton confirmed Thursday that he will call the Denver Broncos’ offensive plays against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, following earlier reports of an expanded role in the process.

“We’ll make a change offensively,” Payton told reporters, according to NFL.com. “I’ll call the plays.”

Offensive coordinator Davis Webb will remain involved in game planning and join Payton on the sideline. Webb became Denver’s coordinator this offseason after three seasons as quarterbacks coach.

The change follows a 2–2 start and a 24–14 loss at San Francisco. Denver has scored 74 points through four games, including only 13 in the first half, according to Field Level Media.

In the Broncos’ Wednesday report, Payton emphasized execution and said quarterback Bo Nix’s job becomes easier when the offense handles the details of each play. Receiver Courtland Sutton also called for the players to improve collectively rather than place responsibility solely on Nix.

“We’ve got to become experts in the details,” Payton said.

Denver visits the 0–4 Chargers in an AFC West matchup Sunday, October 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Mountain Time.
