The Miami Marlins have selected Dillon Lawson as their next hitting coach, according to a report by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Lawson, 41, joined Miami as a roving hitting coach during the summer after leaving his job as an assistant hitting coach with the Boston Red Sox in April. He will replace Pedro Guerrero, who was dismissed following the season.

Miami president of baseball operations Peter Bendix said at his end-of-season news conference that the club wanted a new voice aligned with the rest of its hitting operation.

Lawson previously worked as the New York Yankees’ minor league hitting coordinator and major league hitting coach before joining Boston. His coaching background also includes the Houston Astros’ organization, college baseball and the independent Frontier League.

The Marlins finished the season with a .249 batting average, .326 on-base percentage and .400 slugging percentage. Their 715 runs ranked 18th in the majors, while their on-base percentage was tied for fifth, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ report of the coaching change.
