“Yes he’s capable to swing the bat, but strength is the one thing we haven’t seen from Jose Ramirez this year. He’s a 30-home run type of guy…” Jimmy Rollins said of José Ramírez.

Rollins, Curtis Granderson and Pedro Martínez discussed the Cleveland third baseman on TNT Sports after the White Sox’s 4–3 win in ALDS Game 2 on October 5. Chicago took a 2–0 series lead. Ramírez went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Granderson raised Ramírez’s hand surgery as a possible factor in what the panel was seeing.

“Whenever you have to have surgery they have to cut into your hand… that could be what we’ve been seeing over the course of this whole season and the struggles right now,” Granderson said.

MLB reported that Ramírez had left hamate surgery June 16 and returned July 22.

Martínez also credited Chicago’s pitching. Sean Burke allowed one hit over 5⅓ relief innings, while Cleveland starter Gavin Williams struck out 11 in five innings. The Guardians finished with four hits.

“At this time of the year, you’re facing the top notch pitching from every team you face. And right now he’s facing a really really good bunch of arms that the Chicago White Sox are throwing at them. And you can see it. They just haven’t been able to score any runs or put any offense together. Gavin was excellent today. But they couldn’t put anything together to help him jump ahead,” Martínez said.
