Clara Luvanga scored in the 84th minute to give the Washington Spirit a 3–2 win over the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium on October 4. Houston’s defeat ended its playoff chances, the Dash confirmed in their match report.

Washington twice lost the lead before Luvanga supplied the winner. Tara Rudd headed in Esme Morgan’s corner for the opening goal, but Miljana Ivanović equalized before halftime with the first NWSL goal of her career.

Sofia Cantore restored the Spirit’s advantage early in the second half after receiving a pass from Trinity Rodman. Ivanović answered again following a corner to make it 2–2.

Houston nearly moved ahead when substitute Clarissa Larisey headed against the crossbar. Instead, Claudia Martínez played Luvanga into the box at the other end, and the forward beat Jane Campbell to settle the match.

The Spirit recorded 25 shots to Houston’s 13 and earned their 15th victory of the season. Washington’s report placed the team nine points above the playoff line with three matches remaining, short of formally confirming qualification.

After the international break, Washington returns home to face Gotham FC on October 17. Houston hosts Orlando on October 18.
