How NFL practice-squad elevations work on game day

Saturday’s roster moves show the difference between a temporary game-day elevation and a signing to the 53-man roster.

An NFL practice-squad elevation gives a player temporary eligibility for one game. A signing to the 53-man roster changes his regular roster status. Saturday’s Week 4 announcements included both, which is why two moves described as bringing a player up can have different consequences.

What a standard elevation allows

Teams can elevate up to two practice-squad players for a game. The Buccaneers’ October 3 announcement explains that using both options expands their roster to 55 for the matchup, with 48 players active and seven inactive.

The larger roster does not mean every player will dress or play. Tampa Bay said Easton Stick and Caden Fordham were eligible for Sunday’s game against Green Bay; the final active list is a separate game-day decision.

What happens after the game

A standard elevation ends with the player automatically returning to the practice squad, without going through waivers. Each player can be elevated three times during the regular season. To appear again after using those three elevations, he must be signed to the 53-man roster.

Carolina elevated Ja’seem Reed and Robert Rochell on Saturday. The Panthers said it was each player’s first elevation of the season. Reed adds receiver depth while Jalen Coker remains questionable, but the transaction itself does not establish a starting assignment or a share of offensive snaps.

A signing makes a different commitment

Seattle signed Velus Jones Jr. from its practice squad while placing Jadarian Price on injured reserve. Jones takes a place on the regular 53-man roster. In the same announcement, Seattle elevated Trevon Diggs and Maxen Hook temporarily for the Chargers game.

The useful distinction is in the transaction wording. A standard elevation is tied to the upcoming game and an automatic return. An active-roster signing fills a regular roster spot. Neither, by itself, promises playing time. The Week 4 watch guide has Sunday’s matchups and kickoff times.
