Formula 1 has announced a 10-year agreement to hold an African Grand Prix in Rwanda, with the race expected to join the calendar in the early 2030s.
The event will begin once a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera is completed. F1 said Tuesday that the track will be developed to FIA Grade 1 standards about 40 kilometers south of Kigali, beside the new Kigali International Airport.
The agreement would return Formula 1 to Africa for the first time since 1993. The inaugural race date has not been set, and further details on construction milestones and the race weekend will be announced later.
Rwanda’s Development Board is leading the wider project, which includes sports, tourism, infrastructure and commercial development. F1 said the venue is intended to operate throughout the year, hosting other motorsport, events, conferences and entertainment.
The circuit design will use the area’s natural elevation changes. Its completion remains a condition for the first race.
The announcement establishes a long-term hosting agreement, rather than an immediate addition to next season’s schedule.
