David Perron has signed a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Dallas Stars, extending his NHL career into a 20th season. The Stars announced the addition Friday after the veteran forward had remained an unrestricted free agent since July 1.

Perron, 38, recorded 28 points in 65 regular-season games for Ottawa and Detroit last season. He joined the Red Wings in a March trade and scored three goals in 16 games with Detroit, according to NHL.com’s transaction report.

The signing arrives with Dallas missing Matt Duchene for three months following core muscle surgery. General manager Jim Nill highlighted Perron’s experience and ability in important moments when explaining the addition. The announcement did not establish a permanent line assignment for the new forward.

Perron has 812 points in 1,239 regular-season NHL games and won the Stanley Cup with St. Louis in 2019. He also brings 110 playoff appearances. Dallas, which is 3-3-1, next visits Chicago on Saturday, giving the Stars another veteran option as they work through an early-season injury absence.
