Aaron Donald Says He May Be Better Than Before Retirement

Aaron Donald did not return to the Los Angeles Rams merely hoping that his old form would reappear. After studying fourteen weeks of preparation in detail, he believes he may be moving even better than he did before retirement.

“I’ve been in a football mindset for the last 14 weeks,” Donald told reporters during his first press conference since announcing his NFL comeback.

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year has not played an NFL game since the 2023 season. He used the time before his return to test whether his body could still reproduce the movements that defined his career, rather than relying on reputation or memory.

“I put myself in the best position, the best way I can, with training to get to where I’m at now,” Donald said. “The only thing I can do now is play 11-on-11.”

Donald’s confidence is not cautious. “Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I still feel like I can be myself? 100%.”

The crux of Donald’s assessment came from the way he reviewed his own work. He recorded his training, studied the details of his movement and compared what he saw with the standard he established before stepping away.

“From everything I did, from training, with just conditioning, to the football transition and doing football drills and things in that nature, I recorded everything,” Donald said. “I studied myself to a tee, watched every movement, every cut, every hip flip. In my opinion, I don’t see no difference—if not, it look a little cleaner to me.”

That belief now has to withstand the one test private training cannot reproduce: full-speed football against eleven opponents. Donald acknowledged that 11-on-11 play is the remaining step, but his preparation convinced him that the explosiveness, leverage and change of direction that made him an all-time defender remain intact.

Myles Garrett also factored into the decision. Donald said the two exchanged text messages during the process and spoke again after his return. The strength of the Rams roster mattered as well, giving Donald a chance to rejoin a team he believes can contend without asking him to carry the defense alone.

The comeback will ultimately be judged on the field. Donald’s starting point, however, is unmistakable: he is not returning to discover whether he can still resemble his former self. After fourteen weeks of recording and examining every cut and hip flip, he believes the version coming back may be cleaner.
