How the 2026–27 Champions League format works
The 36-team league phase gives every club eight different opponents, with league position deciding direct qualification, playoffs and home advantage.

The 2026–27 Champions League uses a single league table of 36 clubs rather than groups of four. Each team plays eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away. Its position in that table determines whether it advances directly, faces a playoff or leaves the competition.
The draw divides the clubs into four pots of nine. Each team receives two opponents from every pot, facing one at home and the other away. UEFA’s rules generally prevent a club from drawing another team from its own association and limit it to two opponents from any other association, subject to adjustments needed to complete the draw.
What each finishing position means
A win earns three points and a draw one. The top eight teams go directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing ninth through 24th enter two-legged knockout playoffs, while those in 25th through 36th are eliminated.
The playoff draw uses paired positions. Teams finishing ninth or 10th face a team finishing 23rd or 24th, for example. That does not mean ninth is automatically assigned 24th. Teams in ninth through 16th are seeded and, in principle, play the return leg at home.
Why higher positions keep their value
The top eight are seeded for the round of 16 and play its second leg at home. UEFA’s 2026–27 regulations also give the top four league-phase finishers the quarterfinal second leg at home and the top two the semifinal second leg at home.
If a club eliminates a team holding one of those higher positions, it inherits that team’s place in the bracket. UEFA does not recalculate the bracket from the surviving clubs’ league rankings after each round.
The next dates and the Madrid final
As of October 4, the opening league-phase matchday has been completed. The next games are scheduled for October 13–14, after the combined international window ends. Matchday three follows on October 20–21.
The league phase continues through January 27, 2027. Knockout playoffs take place in February, followed by the round of 16 in March, quarterfinals in April and semifinals spanning late April and early May. The final is scheduled for June 5 at Madrid’s Metropolitano.
The qualification rules are in UEFA’s league-phase regulations, with knockout seeding and draw provisions explaining the bracket. UEFA’s 2026–27 competition guide lists the match dates and final venue.
