Mattias Samuelsson returned to full practice Wednesday as the Buffalo Sabres prepared to open their season against Columbus, giving the club a potential defensive option after an injury-disrupted finish to camp.
His participation improved the outlook without settling his availability. Buffalo was still evaluating whether he could play in the opener, according to The Hockey News’ report from the team’s final practice.
Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen practiced for a second consecutive day after leaving Saturday’s preseason game. Colten Ellis was the other goaltender on the ice as Buffalo continued preparing for Columbus.
The news was less immediate for Olen Zellweger. The defenseman remained in concussion protocol and was not cleared for the opener. Further testing would determine whether he could return for Saturday’s game.
Alex Lyon was also working back from injury. Coach Lindy Ruff indicated his return could be a matter of days.
The distinction for Buffalo is between players progressing and players confirmed available. Wednesday brought useful signs, but the final lineup remained dependent on the next medical and coaching decisions.
