Alexander Isak finally gives Liverpool the night it paid for
Isak scored twice inside nine minutes at Ipswich, giving Andoni Iraola his first Liverpool win and offering the clearest sign yet that the striker's lost first season is behind him.

IPSWICH, England – For Liverpool, the encouraging part was not simply that Alexander Isak scored twice.
It was how quickly the game began to resemble the version of Isak the club thought it had bought.
Isak scored both goals inside the opening nine minutes Friday as Liverpool beat Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road, giving new manager Andoni Iraola his first Premier League victory at the third attempt.
Cody Gakpo created both goals. Liverpool attacked quickly after recovering possession, and Isak supplied two different finishes before Ipswich had found any rhythm in the match.
Nine minutes in, Liverpool had the lead it would keep for the rest of the night.
For Isak, the significance reaches beyond one road win.
Liverpool paid a British-record fee to bring him from Newcastle in 2025, then watched his first season become an injury-disrupted exercise in trying to regain rhythm. The striker who had been one of the Premier League’s most dangerous scorers rarely had enough continuity to build momentum.
This season has opened differently.
Isak has three goals in Liverpool’s first three league matches. Against Ipswich, his movement repeatedly gave Gakpo an immediate forward option when Liverpool won the ball.
“We were talking about when we win the ball to get forward as quickly as possible because that’s when things are quite open,” Isak told Liverpool’s official website.
That explanation was visible in both goals. Liverpool did not need long possessions to create its best chances. It needed speed after the turnover, a runner in the right space and a striker ready to finish.
The rest of the match was less spectacular. Ipswich stayed in the game, Liverpool created less after halftime, and a two-goal burst should not be mistaken for a complete verdict on a new manager or a new season.
Iraola will take the broader result anyway.
Liverpool opened his tenure with consecutive 2-2 draws. Friday brought the first win, the first clean sheet of his league season and the best early evidence that Isak can become the centerpiece the club expected.
The sample remains small.
This time, the direction is unmistakably better.
