Cole Kmet will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson confirmed Friday. The team also placed the tight end on injured reserve.

Kmet was hurt midway through the fourth quarter of Thursday’s 30-24 victory over the New England Patriots at Soldier Field. Chicago improved to 5-2 with the win.

Johnson discussed the injury during his Friday virtual media availability, according to the Bears’ account of his comments. He described Kmet as an important leader and said the team would miss his presence.

The Bears selected Kmet in the second round of the 2020 draft. He is the longest-tenured player on their roster.

Before leaving Thursday’s game, Kmet caught three passes for 28 yards. That took his career receiving total to 3,026 yards, making him and Mike Ditka the only Bears tight ends to reach 3,000.

Colston Loveland finished the same game with a season-high seven catches for 69 yards. Chicago announced Kmet’s injured-reserve move Friday afternoon.
