Sam LaPorta Contract Update: Lions Tight End Says He Wants to Stay
LaPorta clarified his position Friday after criticizing the state of his contract talks with Detroit earlier in the week.

“My intentions are I want to play for this team,” Sam LaPorta said Friday as he clarified his comments about contract negotiations with the Detroit Lions.
LaPorta had criticized the negotiations Wednesday. In his Friday response, he said he felt bad if the remarks had distracted his teammates or coaches, according to NFL.com’s account of the comments.
“We want to have stability,” LaPorta said.
The tight end is playing the final year of his rookie contract. His 2025 season ended early because of a back injury, and he said his family’s future mattered as he and his wife prepare for the birth of their first child.
“We want to be here with the Lions,” LaPorta said.
