How Kimi Antonelli Can Win the F1 Title in Austin
A victory alone is insufficient: George Russell’s and Lewis Hamilton’s finishes also matter.

Kimi Antonelli can win his first Formula 1 drivers’ championship at Sunday’s United States Grand Prix if he wins, George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. Those are the conditions in F1’s official permutations.
Why Those Finishes Matter
The current standings give Antonelli 340 points, Russell 238, Hamilton 229 and Max Verstappen 221. Five Grands Prix will remain after Austin, with a maximum of 125 points available under F1’s published championship calculation.
Using the normal full-distance points allocation, an Antonelli victory adds 25. Ninth place gives Russell two points, producing a 125-point gap. Fifth gives Hamilton 10, leaving him 126 behind. Verstappen could finish second for 18 points and would also trail by 126.
| Driver | Result with Antonelli winning | Gap after Austin |
|---|---|---|
| Russell | Ninth | 125 points |
| Hamilton | Fifth | 126 points |
| Verstappen | Second | 126 points |
Why a 125-Point Gap Can Be Enough
Equal points do not automatically extend the championship fight. The FIA’s championship rules first separate tied drivers by race wins. F1’s published Austin scenarios account for that countback; they do not require Antonelli to finish 126 points ahead of every rival.
If he finishes second, the maximum gain over a non-scoring Russell is 18 points, short of the 23-point increase required. Finishing second or third would leave the championship unresolved. Sunday’s race is scheduled for 2 p.m. MDT on October 25, according to F1’s race-week schedule.
