Manchester City seek seventh straight league win against Ipswich

City return to the Premier League after a 4–2 European defeat. Ipswich arrive with three wins and a habit of finishing strongly.

Manchester City’s perfect Premier League start faces a different test on Saturday: how quickly Enzo Maresca’s side can recover from a heavy European defeat.

City host Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium on October 17, with kickoff at 3 p.m. British time, 10 a.m. Eastern and 8 a.m. Mountain. They have won their opening six league matches. Wednesday’s 4–2 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain interrupted that momentum without changing the league record.

The challenge is to keep those competitions separate while fixing what went wrong. City cannot recover Champions League points against Ipswich, but they can prevent one poor evening from becoming a broader interruption.

The response starts before halftime

As beIN Sports’ preview details, PSG scored three times in the opening 32 minutes. Erling Haaland’s two second-half goals gave City a response, but the visitors still left with the win. Maresca subsequently acknowledged the need to manage players with another match arriving quickly.

That makes the opening phase against Ipswich particularly useful to watch. City need their possession to keep the visitors away from goal, rather than leave defenders dealing with direct attacks after a turnover. A controlled first half would also give Maresca more freedom over substitutions after the midweek workload.

Ipswich bring more than a defensive assignment

Gary O’Neil’s side have won three of their first six league matches. Their latest victory was a 2–1 comeback against Fulham, with Abdoul Ouattara and Dara O’Shea scoring late. Each of their three league wins has included a winner in the 90th minute or later, according to the Opta preview.

For City, the practical lesson is about concentration through stoppage time. For Ipswich, it offers evidence that remaining within reach can matter even when a match appears to be slipping away. It does not remove the difficulty of defending at the Etihad for long stretches.

City’s official preview notes that Ipswich’s early wins came against Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Fulham. O’Neil took charge in the summer after working at Strasbourg. Saturday provides a much different measure of the promoted side’s progress.

Haaland and the selection decisions

Haaland scored four times across the clubs’ two league meetings in 2024–25. City won those matches 4–1 and 6–0. Those results explain the scale of the assignment, but this Ipswich team and its manager deserve assessment on their current work.

Confirmed selections will come later. As of Thursday’s publication, Maresca’s scheduled Friday press conference had not taken place, so a projected lineup should not be mistaken for team news. The key question is how much rotation City can make while preserving their attacking rhythm.
