Montreal’s Olympic Stadium roof is on schedule, but reopening remains unsettled

“The next step is to lift it into position,” CTV reporter Olivia O’Malley said in an October 8 report on the replacement roof at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium.

Olympic Park officials told CTV the work remains on schedule for spring 2028 and within its C$870 million budget. Plans for the interior are still being developed, and the report gave no reopening date for the main stadium.

The stadium was the Montreal Expos’ home from 1977 through 2004.

The roof is being assembled about 13 meters above the ground to simplify construction. Six larger towers are due to support the lift in late November and early December. CTV reported that raising it will take about a week, with 24 cables suspending it from the stadium tower.

The operation requires synchronized movement while preserving the roof’s slope so it can fit into position, an Olympic Park official explained in the report.

Olympic Park’s published construction schedule places fabrication, assembly and installation in 2026–27, followed by completion of the roof project in 2028. Its investment plan lists C$870 million for design, construction, financing and maintenance.

The closure concerns the main playing area. Other spaces within the complex continue to host events: Olympic Park lists the Salon National des Animaux de Compagnie in the East Hall on November 7–8.

Officials told CTV they have received interest from event organizers, but booking the main venue remains difficult while its return date is unresolved.
