Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4–1 on Monday to move out of the Premier League relegation zone and record their first home victory in the competition for 25 years.
Jack Rudoni put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Sidiki Cherif. Cherif doubled the lead early in the second half.
Sven Botman pulled a goal back with about 20 minutes remaining, but substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored late to put the result beyond Newcastle.
The victory gave Frank Lampard’s side consecutive league wins following their success at Nottingham Forest. Coventry climbed to 14th, Sky Sports reported.
Bobby Thomas made two important goal-line clearances before halftime, helping preserve Coventry’s lead during Newcastle’s strongest spells.
Cherif, 19, was making his first Premier League start. He won the early penalty and supplied Coventry’s second goal before the late substitutes finished the job.
Newcastle were left with another heavy away defeat. Coventry’s clinical finishing and recovery after Botman’s goal made the evening a significant step in their return to the top division.
