The Cleveland Browns have no plans to trade quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel despite injuries creating needs elsewhere in the NFL, Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported Sunday.
The report indicates Cleveland intends to retain its developmental quarterbacks behind starter Deshaun Watson. Rookie Taylen Green is also part of the group, leaving the Browns with several young players at the position while other clubs assess replacements for injured starters.
Gabriel is on injured reserve, while Sanders is Watson’s backup. Green has been serving as the inactive third quarterback. The different designations mean the four-player group is not the same as four available passers on the game-day roster.
Cabot reported that the Browns were not planning to move Sanders or Gabriel either immediately or before the November 10 trade deadline. That is the club’s reported position at this point in the season; it does not establish that no team has expressed interest.
The quarterback market has drawn renewed attention after the New York Giants lost Jaxson Dart for the rest of the regular season. Dart injured his knee during Monday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams, leaving Jameis Winston to take over.
Giants coach John Harbaugh confirmed Dart’s absence and said the team was keeping its options open. NFL Network and ESPN reported Sunday that New York was assessing several veteran possibilities, including free agent Jimmy Garoppolo and quarterbacks serving as backups elsewhere.
The Giants had not announced a deal with any of those reported candidates. Cleveland’s apparent willingness to retain its own quarterbacks therefore represents another piece of an unsettled market, rather than a response to a confirmed transaction.
Sanders and Gabriel both have NFL starting experience, but the Browns have continued with Watson at the top of the depth chart this season. Keeping the younger quarterbacks would preserve alternatives within the organisation while they continue their development.
Cleveland’s official Week 3 inactive list confirmed Green’s designation as the third quarterback for the home game against Carolina. Cornerback Tyson Campbell, linebacker Justin Jefferson, center Parker Brailsford and guard Teven Jenkins were also inactive.
The report did not identify an offer for either Sanders or Gabriel. Cleveland has not announced a quarterback trade, and Gabriel’s injured-reserve status remains a separate consideration from the club’s longer-term plans at the position.
