MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane will miss the rest of the season after tearing an ACL in Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, NFL Network and ESPN reported Monday.
Achane was injured during Miami’s opening possession. He walked to the sideline, underwent evaluation and did not return to the game, leaving the Dolphins without the player expected to lead their rebuilt backfield.
The reported diagnosis deepens the difficulties for an 0–3 team in its first season under coach Jeff Hafley. Miami had committed to Achane as a central part of its future with a four-year, $64 million extension during the offseason.
Achane entered the year after rushing for 1,350 yards in 2025 and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. His combination of rushing and receiving production made him a major part of the plan around new starting quarterback Malik Willis.
The early results this season had been more modest. Achane finished his abbreviated campaign with 127 rushing yards on 34 carries and seven catches for 49 yards, without a touchdown, according to NFL.com.
He had gained 17 yards on three carries before leaving Sunday’s game. The Associated Press reported that Miami had involved him as either the runner or intended receiver on four of its first five plays, showing how prominently he figured in the opening script.
Ollie Gordon II handled 17 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown after Miami adjusted. Jaylen Wright is another backfield option, but he was inactive Sunday while dealing with an injury, leaving his availability important to the next stage of the Dolphins’ planning.
Miami also used receiver Malik Washington at running back during the game. Those options offer ways to distribute touches, although the team had not announced a permanent replacement plan on Monday morning.
Hafley had expressed concern about Achane’s knee after the loss. The subsequent reporting points to a much longer absence than a weekly injury designation, forcing Miami to address both its immediate rushing workload and the loss of one of its most dangerous receiving options from the backfield.
