Blue Jays eliminated from playoffs a year after winning AL pennant

Baltimore’s doubleheader sweep leaves Toronto with a losing record and three games remaining after its 2025 run to the World Series.

The Toronto Blue Jays will miss the postseason a year after coming within one win of a World Series title. A 4-2 loss in the opener of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Baltimore ended their playoff chances, and another 4-2 defeat completed the sweep.

Max Scherzer struck out seven in the first game but allowed four earned runs, including Peter Alonso’s two-run homer in the fifth. Toronto had needed to win every remaining game and have either Cleveland or the Chicago White Sox lose out.

The second loss left the Blue Jays at 77-82, guaranteeing a losing season. Davis Schneider hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning of the nightcap, but Toronto could not recover from an early four-run deficit.

Toronto is off Thursday before opening its final three-game series against Cincinnati at home Friday. The Blue Jays will finish the regular season Sunday at Rogers Centre.
