Seattle Kraken forward Jacob Melanson remains out indefinitely after the injury he sustained in the season opener was diagnosed as an anterior mediastinum hematoma with a vascular pseudoaneurysm.

The Kraken announced the diagnosis Saturday. Melanson was injured during Seattle’s 6–1 win at Calgary on October 1 and had already been unavailable with an upper-body injury.

The team said its medical staff would continue evaluating and monitoring him through recovery, with a gradual progression toward returning to hockey. No return date was provided.

Coach Lane Lambert said Sunday that Melanson was recovering and credited the medical team’s prompt response, according to NHL.com’s report.

The 23-year-old appeared in 36 games for Seattle last season, recording two goals and three assists. He has played 38 NHL games overall after being selected in the fifth round of the 2021 draft.

The diagnosis gives more detail about an absence that began in the opener. Seattle’s stated plan remains medical monitoring followed by a gradual return, so the announcement does not establish when Melanson can resume practice or game play.
